Just wondering if anyone has been to Hermes in Noumea and what it is like there? Am going to New Caledonia on holiday in a couple of weeks time. I understand that it is a concession store and the lady owner is very nice. I'm hoping to find some older scarves/shawls!!!

Thanks:heart:

I will be uploading some photos of the exterior of the store a little later with directions for any tPFers who are going there. It's definitely worth going to have a look.

The address of the store is on the Hermes website. H is near the main plaza called Place de Cocotiers. If you're staying at the main tourist places in Bain de Citrons, Anse Vata or Port Plaisance, you can catch a local bus (red) number 1 (green numbering) to Place de Cocotiers. There are cabs around (green/white) but I didn't see many out of the main city.

People are very friendly generally even with my total lack of French speaking skills.

It's a little strange being in a H store where when they show you bags, they just carry the bags in the dustbags out of the store room 5 at a time. No storing of bags in boxes! They do give you boxes when you buy the items but strangely no scarf boxes. I had my scarves presented in tie type packets.

I met 4 people at the store and they had different levels of knowledge of H items, colours and leathers. Check the items before purchasing for scratches, marks etc. When they showed me the calvis, they were stored in a drawer like playing cards with nothing protecting them between each other and the shelf. Similarly with the Kelly pochettes where the bags in their dustbags were stuffed into a drawer. The lizard pochette was fine but the swift pochette was a little scuffed.

There is a 5% duty on items in New Caledonia but there are designated duty free shops and Hermes is one of them. You purchase your items excluding tax and pick them up at the airport. They show a XPF and Euro figure on your credit card slip. Note:

1. They give you a piece of paper with a reference number for an airport pickup.
2. They did not give me a itemised bill for the goods (I thought it would be at the airport but no!). I called them when I got home and they will email/fax a list to you. So ask beforehand.
3. The place where you pick the items up at the airport is near the duty free shop after you've gone through immigration. It may be closed (I was leaving at 8.15am and it wasn't open still at 7.30am!) so ask the other staff that are around.

Beautiful pictures! thanks for the report. I've been to Vanuatu and Fiji and didn't exactly consider them shopping destinations. I actually asked our driver in Fiji to please take me back to the beach after 30 minutes. New Caledonia is the place to get H! wow, what inventory.

The Tjibaou cultural centre. Take a tour with a get on/get off bus around the city. I also went on a "Taste of France" tour which went to the markets, a supermarket (with a tour of the bakery and baguettes - yummy!), wine/pate tasting place, a tucked away place for fantastic crepes!. Tours to outlying islands (which I didn't do), just walking around on the foreshore - it's just gorgeous.

There's is also a really nice chocolatier in the city.
