So I was talking about this with my DH who is in business. He said that this person's wealth is in shares of the company, likely not in cash. So if the share get passed on, this gardener will have control of 5-6% of the company. This might be a F U to his other family members who will now have a random gardener on the board.

However, in general, I have to say that I find his desire to give such a huge sum to one person and bypass an existing philanthropic commitment more than a bit disappointing. Can't he find a way to split the money so everyone's happy?
