Paris: Hermès has opened a temporary store on the Left Bank at 16 Rue de Grenelle, the toniest shopping street in the area (of course). It will remain open for approximately one year until construction at the permanent Left Bank store at 17 Rue de Sevres is completed. I have heard that H was searching for the perfect Left Bank location for years and I guess they finally found it (them).

Thanks for the info. Will try it this weekend.

Just got back from Paris and I had the chance to drop into the little temporary Left Bank store. They may be "growing" new staff--the young woman I spoke with was full of energy and thrilled to have begun working for H. Smaller space, and the design was a little fresher and younger--rustic, cute, somewhat whimsical displays.

Nowhere near the selection of the FSH store, of course, but a pleasant trip. According to one person, they will not be selling birkins at this location (probably not kellys either) so if your strategy is to score one of those bags, stick to FSH and George V. If on the other hand you are happy poking through a more limited (but still lovely) stock in a fresh new place with charming designs, it makes for a pleasant and easy detour when you are in the 6th. And you can make friends with some of the newer faces working for H.

The staff is thrilled about the eventual new store--sounds wonderful.

This is weird - when I was last in the Rue Grenelle store, the shelves were full of Kellys in all sorts of sizes: 28, 32, 35 and even the KP. When I asked about a Birkin, they said they'd just sold out earlier.

I wonder why they changed this policy. I would've thought they would want to encourage more people to this store?

I could have misinterpreted (I was speaking French, alas). There was everything but birkins and kellys, and when I asked, the SA basically said "not in this store."

Either I got it totally wrong (possible!) or she thought I was not a birkin candidate (always a possibility) or there was a policy change.

Anyway--please then take what I said with a grain of salt (sel, in French!).
