I'm just curious does anyone know why Hermes' bags are so readily available in Tokyo and not other countries, particularly Paris?
I know that there's probably a really high demand in Tokyo but from what I've been reading, there are equally high demands in every other country.

Could it be H gets better profit margins from the Japanese market so they tend to ship more bags to Japan?

For the entire luxury market (not just H, but LV, Chanel etc), Japan accounts for about 20-30% of worldwide sales (maybe more, this is ballpark figure in my head based on what I read a long time ago). That's a very large proportion of sales.

It makes sense to provide more bags for the markets which are doing very well. And of course, there is a serious mark-up in Japan, about 30% more than Paris prices, so there is the profit there.

I was told by one SM that the H make the highest profit on Croc Birkins in Japan, therefore I guess it makes more business sense to increase the quotas to countries where the largest profit is made.

I can understand the profitability reason but why do we need to engage in psychological warfare to get the bags in Paris while in Japan, we don't have to? It's like H didn't position itself as being too exclusive in Japan. Perhaps the high prices in Japan helps to offset the "thrill" from buying in Paris!

Don't forget that in many parts of the world, Birkins are kept for all their regulars.

I won't be surprised that hundreds pass through each store, but only 1 or 2 (if any at all) make their way to the shelves. It's possible that some of the bigger stores receive an equal quota that Japan does, but they choose not to display it and keep it in the back.

I can't believe that Paris boutiques only have 2-3 for sale every day. I think you could be right, they probably receive a lot more bags that what they have for sale on the 'open market' and the rest are for their regular customers or reservations customers.

Remember, Hermes is more than about birkins/kellys, FSH probably get lots of other bags, SLGs and etc. I have never seen birkins on the SHELF in FSH nor George V, but often, they will have more in the back which can get sold out very quickly throughout the day.

Even for birkins/kellys, there are also various sizes to consider. The more popular sizes will move faster.

And all these get sold so quickly too! :pout:
Blink, and you'll probably miss all of them.

For the ultra novice, which Hermes store in France does one have the best shot at snagging a birkin? Does it get to the time of day? Also, who are the best resellers in paris?

I think you are right about the Japanese making up a large market share of H purchases. When I was in Honolulu, the H store at Ala Moana Centre had 3 Birkins out on the counter and then when I went back the following day, those 3 had been sold and they had already put out 3 more in their place!

hi, i'm new here in this forum..
reading this is interesting, but could we really just walk-in an H store in Japan and get a Birkin or Kelly, just like that? if so, i'm going there -- :p
