Personally, if you LOVE the ring the way it is, I don't understand spending more money just for the sake of Maxing out a budget.
His finances will effect you when your married, so its not like its just "his" money to blow on the ring. And diamonds are not an investment. (Ask anyone who has tried to resell a diamond.) There are a lot of wise things that money can be put towards especially for a new married couple. I'm *NOT saying its wrong to spend money on your engagement ring and get something you Love. I AM saying its not wise to spend money just for the sake of spending more money. Also, is this a cash purchase or a financed purchase with a "payment budget"? Any debt is already "over budget".

A very successful person I look up to once said to me,

"Just because you have the money doesn't mean you can afford it."

That advice prevented me from making what would have ended up being an EPIC financial mistake. And its valuable in every situation.

Brutal honesty.
BTW, that ring is absolutely gorgeous on you.

Thanks so much for responding. I totally agree with you about not financing the ring. It will be a cash purchase. He's a strong believer that the ring should be a certain number of his months salary. We are both older (in our 30s) and have a great savings and almost no debt except for mortgage.

I guess being an accountant I am with you in that we should keep the cash and invest it. I just don't see the point in paying thousands of dollars more for something that has very little variance.

I've thought about getting two bands (one on top and one on the bottom) but I really want to use my grandmothers diamonds from her wedding ring for the bands so the cost is still minimal.

We are going to a few other places tomorrow. I will let you guys know what we decide.

If you want simple, why not maybe go with a larger EC in a solitaire? That would be more simple/classic. Also--there are tons of ratios for ECs so keep looking if you're not happy with the ones you're being offered. You don't have to get one that is just "long" vs has a little more width. Don't just settle for the ones this jeweler has. Ask for more or go elsewhere.

Do you have any pictures you can post? I tried other EC on and they didn't make me fall in love like this one did.

Do you tend to wear more delicate jewelry or chunkier/bigger/weightier pieces? If you are a delicate jewelry type, I'd say go for the 1ct. If you tend to wear more significant pieces on a regular basis, I'd go larger so your ring doesn't seem dinky in comparison.

I typically have delicate jewelry. Diamond studs or pearl studs, a pearl bracelet, and a pearl ring are worn almost daily

Looking at the sample ring on your finger again, If you were to get a simple larger emerald cut stone without the halo that might be a similar size and easier to wear. Could that work? Just concentrate on the stone? Good luck fun puzzle to solve.

4Elegance, That is awesome I'm so happy for you. (Not that you need me to tell you your smart) I just get so grieved by couples that put so much emphasis on the size of the ring they leverage themselves and go into debt or feel pressured to spend x amount of dollars. That whole salary rule was a marketing attempt by Debeers and the diamond industry to get people to spend money (it worked LOL)

Anyway, back to the ring. Since you have a nice cash budget I don't feel irresponsible telling you that you may want to go larger. I say this because your not used to wearing a ring there right now and what seems big may infact not seem so much 5 (or 1) year from now. I personally love that style, Emerald cut is so lovely because it looks so classy, its won't sparkle as crazy as a round but its so elegant and really showcases the quality of the stone. An emerald is actually one of the shapes I think looks nice in the larger CT weight without getting flashy if your wanting simple glam.

I like the Halo because it adds a little extra bling but its delicate enough it won't overpower the center stone. I'm sure the jeweler can order that same ring as a semi mount for a 1.5 Ct......that might be a good size you could feel comfortable in. Keep in mind the emerald cut you really need to stay with the higher clarity because you can see right into the stone, deffinatly a VS1 or better. (A true VS1, like AGS or GIA not an EGL inflated grade) They won't be as readily available as rounds because they aren't cut as often and the proportions can vary so it up to your taste. Some people like long and skinny some like short and wide, the one you have on is a pleasing ratio. Also keep in mind the larger the CT weight, the deeper the pavilion gets meaning the stone has to be set higher, a 2ct might get a little higher than you like.

A band on each side would be lovely, it would make the ring look a little wider if you want a bolder look, or you could wear one band, and you can take the EC off and wear the 2 bands if you go, say, to the beach or pool or running or whatever. You can also specify to the jeweler when they set the stone, to have it set as low into the semi mount as possible. Don't let them talk you into modifying that mounting for a bigger stone, I've seen salespeople do that to save time and energy. Make sure they get it right. Whatever you decide it's beautiful, congratulations :)
Hope I get to see pics.

Thanks so much ladies. We decided on a ring today and here it is. I love it and he loves it too. We are having it sized for my finger and then the waiting game for him to make it official begins. It's totally different from what I started with but when I saw it and the details of his he setting (you can't see here but the side is both rose gold and platinum) I fell in love. We also upgraded to a better quality center stone. Total carat weight is 2.02.

Go for larger! Diamond Shrinkage syndrome (DSS) is a real thing and I have experienced it. LOL
It won't look so large on your hand when you get used to it, and you probably won't regret going larger as much as you might regret going smaller.

Late to the party.
Without knowing the diamond stats I love this setting on you. Classic with pizzazz!
Congrats!!!

Thanks everyone for your help. I love it and so does he. It seemed to be a much easier decision once I found "the one" and the fact that he kept telling the salesman "don't ask me, ask her, it's whatever she wants" made it a great experience
