I would recommend a lunch or gallery tote. The factory made ones that were just around are really cute and have tons of room. Plus the leather is nice and light so the bag won't be super heavy with all those books in it. They have leather and Sig in all different colors. I borrowed these pics from the bay. This is one of the taller ones. They have the same look of bag but it's shorter and wider. They zip closed and are just too cute!

I actually bought a Coach diaper bag that I use as a messenger -it's amazing because it has SOOOO many pockets, and you can wear across the body to save your back. Also fits a laptop and accessories with ease.

Take some books up to the factory store and try the books in some bags. Or measure the books and see if they will fit in your selected totes.

Books may be going by the wayside so if your texts are on DVDs then you might just need a case to fit your laptop and notebooks.

I use my gallery tote but you definitely cannot carry more than two large books. I honestly recommend using a backpack and then just carrying a small coach purse or wristlet that is what I do unless I just need a notebook or my really small books then I use my gallery tote. If I use a large coach bag it gets beat up easy so instead I just beat up my backpack :) lol

Honestly, I'd get a coated canvas Heritage stripe tote if I wanted a bookbag.

The ergo satchel (or any satchel) and Carlys wouldn't work well, IMO

I agree. Since you will be using this everyday to tote heavy things I think the heritage stripe would be your best bet. Its much more durable because of the coated canvas and the larger size tote should be plenty of room for books, notebooks, and a laptop.

If you want a different look, I also suggest the Coach Julianne. I can fit a few notebooks and my laptop in mine. I have the leather one, but I suggest the fabric one so you don't have to worry about taking leather out in bad weather in case it rains or snows.

i would go for a large ergo tote... i have a HS tote and i guess it would hold a couple books.. i usually though have a make up bag, wallet, a full size BBW body cream, a hairbrush, gum, keys, phone, sometimes my digital camera, and couple other things and these all fit in it :)

I'd go for the lunch or gallery tote. I have a coated canvas lunch tote I use as a diaper bag and it's pretty darn durable and they're so cute. I'd also consider a Vera Bradley tote - my daughter and some of her friends use these instead of backpacks, they hold a lot, have lots of little pockets, and are surprisingly tough and completely washable. Plus my daughter's big tote was only $78 so you could get some cute accessories or a clutch like someone else suggested. Good luck at school whatever you choose.

i just finished college in december and never once carried a bookbag. i always used over sized totes. i think the hs tote and gallery totes are excellent suggestions. i had 3 different totes i'd switch between throughout the year (depending on the season) and all of them are still in perfect condition (even after being used for 4.5 years). i usually didn't bring my actual book to class because i never once had a prof who made us read from it in class (they had powerpoints up with the info they wanted us to take notes on or they'd just talk). so i usually only had notebooks in it (or a novel for an english class). plus i generally didn't have more than 2 classes right in a row so i had time to walk home and switch out my stuff before my next group of classes.

I have a black mini sig multi-function tote that I have been using as a computer/school bag. It's a good size and I use it everyday and it stills in such great condition! I usually baby my bags, but I don't really have to with my tote. I love it! I got it an outlet back in the Fall.

Yup I'm not sensible at all I guess :graucho:

But I'm currently in uni and I use a leather Julianne (teal of all colours!!) as my uni bag. I'm studying full time as a medical student and my campus is huge so I'm lugging her all over the place! I certainly do not carry around huge texts with me in her though! I carry around a small (A5) folder and my pencil case in her, together with all my daily essentials, lunch and drink bottle and I'm set! I usually print out some of my lecture notes if they're available the night before and fold them up to pop into the folder and that's really all I need for class for the day... unless I have lab that day, in which case, I carry a seperate bag to hold my labcoat and gloves and whatnot in coz they're gross lol.

If it's a day when I have heaps of lectures and no lecture notes as of yet, I take my laptop in with me in my laptop bag, plus a smaller handbag like my Sabrina for all my other stuff. Yep. I carry a lot...

A couple of my friends (and lots of girls on campus) use the Longchamp tote though. Apparently that one can hold up to a fair amount of abuse.

For something a little more understated I sometimes go with my Mia satchel (coach) since I can always somehow squeeze everything in there! (have to carry my drink bottle though)!

I have to agree with those that suggested going with a bookbag and then throwing in a capacity wristlet to carry all of your essentials.
I carried a bookbag all through undergrad b/c I was on a huge campus and carrying the notebooks I needed for the day on only one shoulder would have made me never want to carry the bag again by the end of the first week. Just yesterday when I was leaving school I threw a few notebooks in my tote to carry home with for studying this weekend. Granted I had all of the normal stuff I carry in my purse in addition to these notebooks, but I couldn't imagine having to carry that kind of weight around on my shoulder for more than the 5 mins it took me to get to the car.
I definitely think that's something you should really take into consideration!
