I've had some money saved for a while which I have been intending to use either for a preloved Cartier Love bracelet or a new pair of 1-1.5 carat diamond studs. I've pretty much decided now that I will get the studs at the end of this month, have gone off the idea of the Love. This leaves me with my current pair of half carat studs (0.25 in each ear) to find another use for.

I also have a 0.25 carat diamond solitaire pendant which I rarely wear these days, so I have been thinking about using all three diamonds to make a three-stone DBTY-style necklace - probably in rose gold, since I am loving rose gold at the moment and thought it would look great layered with my Tiffany rose gold mini bean.

Do you think a DBTY-style necklace would look ok with three 0.25 carat diamonds (tcw of 0.75), or are they too big for this kind of style used together? I'd like the finished necklace to be delicate enough to be worn layered with other pendants but also to look good worn on its own.

Also, chain length? I would like to be able to layer this with my bean and the chain on that is 18 inches, so the chain on my DBTY necklace would need to be either 16 inches or 20 inches. If worn on its own I think it would look better at 20 inches but I'm not sure how good that length would look when worn with the bean. Does anyone have a similar multi-stone DBTY necklace (any metal colour) who can post photos for inspiration? :graucho:

I think it would look great! 16" would be good for layering and on its own, I think. But if you're having it custom made, you could always have it made to 20" with a jump ring on 16" (and maybe even 18" for extra flexibility)?

If you think the stones might be too big (but are well-matched), you might also consider having your jeweller make you an Aria-style necklace. I'm obsessed with it! http://www.tiffany.co.uk/Shopping/I...s+1-p+1-c+-r+-x+-n+6-ri+-ni+0-t+aria&search=1

Oooh that is very pretty! :smile1: More ideas to think about! Great idea about the chain too, I'm sure the jeweller would be able to add jump rings and it would be fab to be able to change the length depending on how I want to wear it. The stones are quite well-matched, luckily since I bought the studs and the solitaire stone from different jewellers. They are all ideal cut and VS clarity, although the studs are slightly better at VS1/F. The solitaire diamond is VS2/I. I was a bit worried about the difference in the colour grades but having put all three diamonds side by side they do look good and I think spaced out on a DBTY-style chain any difference in colour will not be noticeable.

OBTM - I'm really looking forward to hearing and seeing what you decide on. You've had a great suggestion for the DBTY necklace which I think would be really handy with the jump ring....this will be a great reveal :D

Just a thought I have a three diamond stone ring......?

Thanks hun, I can't wait :D My old diamond studs (0.30 tcw) have gone to my mum as she is having something similar to the Hearts on Fire Fulfillment pendant made for me for my birthday as a pressie, which I have wanted for ages, so am very excited about both commissions.

Thanks for the suggestion about the ring, I think that would look stunning but I have several beautiful diamond rings from my grandmother already so think I would get more wear out of a necklace or earrings. Another idea I had was to get diamond jackets made for my old studs to have something a bit different, but I'm thinking it may be better to do that for my new studs as with 0.50 in each ear and the jacket around them they would look gorgeous and I can wear them with/without the jackets for everyday or special occasions.

I think there may be 2 issues you should consider. The first is that I hear of people saying that their diamonds flip quite a bit and when I looked at using .20 to .25 stones jewelers discouraged me from going this large- partly because of them flipping around (it is more noticeable that they've flipped over when they are larger). The smaller diamonds are just more like flashes of diamonds and you don't really notice they are flipped.

The second issue is that the necklace will likely rotate on your neck and if you only have 3 diamonds- you may just end up with chain in the front and diamonds in the back. What you might consider doing is using your 3 diamonds of .25 then add a .15 on each side, then a .10 for a total of 7 diamonds that graduate in size and go most of the way around.

I am not trying to totally discourage you, though, as I still haven't decided what I'm going to do yet and I may still decide to use mine in a dbty type setting although I am now thinking maybe a bracelet instead.

Thanks for your advice. I think you are right about them flipping as I used to have a Tiffany & Co DBTY necklace with a 0.08 diamond and it used to flip a lot, although I always thought that if it was a bit bigger it might sit better for some reason. It would also annoy me if I constantly had to adjust the chain to ensure that the diamonds are at the front.

Hmmm, will have to have a think!

The jacket idea sounds fab as well...

Just read the reply below about the "flipping" hmmm not sure whether they would flip or not, it get's you thinking doesn't it!! As for the necklace rotating, I think you have that problem with any necklace, I for one do not like the fastener on a necklace creeping round to the front...I'm constantly checking it's at the back where it should be :D

i was also going to say that i think that at the sizes you mentioned, a three stone necklace especially will flip constantly. a single stone might sit better depending on the type of bezel or setting you use (or maybe that aria type?). i have BGD custom made dbty bracelet with 0.1ct stones that flip constantly but i knew they would when i had it made. i honestly chose 0.1ct stones because any larger and they automatically sit on an angle off of the point of the diamond and then flip almost automatically. i've also heard some people on here complain that they dbty necklaces irritate their necks due to the poking from the diamonds into the skin. i LOVE the look of dbty, but such a pain with stones flipping they way that they do! good luck :)

This is interesting...does it happen with the bracelets as well?

While I love the concept of having dainty diamonds strung on a fine chain, the reality of wearing them is just plain annoying............this is, of course, just my humble opinion.
I was so excited to get my Tiffany RG 5 stone bracelet when I was in Dubai last November, and now it sits in my jewel box. Maybe I am unlucky, but it seemed that EVERY time I would look at my wrist, it had flipped. I would fix it and 10 seconds later.....flipped again!!
So many people like them - I wish I was one of them

Thanks this is really helpful although doesn't the diamond look the same on both sides?

Oh dear, I think you are right - probably not a good idea to do this  My Tiffany DBTY necklace in YG (single stone) did flip and the Tiffany DBTY bracelet that I have now, also with a single stone, also flips. I had wondered whether having bigger stones might have the opposite effect but it sounds as if they might create other issues. Perhaps I am better off getting jackets made for the studs instead.

I still have a DBTY bracelet and it does flip. I don't mind that so much with a bracelet though but it would (and did when I had one) annoy me with a necklace!

Oh what a shame! Your bracelet sounds absolutely gorgeous.

What about something like these:

Like a cross between the Aria and a DBTY and they probably won't flip either!

btw, I have a similar size (.25) single DBTY style pendant and mine only flipped after I've been working out or sleeping or something-- it's also on an 18" chain though.

Thanks for the links! I really like the last one in particular, very pretty :smile1: That's also useful to know about your .25 DBTY pendant, I guess I could always use just one of the diamonds and then find a use for the other at a later stage.
