Thank you for your comment! :flowers: Does the fabric ever get softer when used a lot? I find these Burberry trenches to be quite stiff.

I believe the Chelsea is a narrow fit in general, so maybe that’s why it’s difficult to use for layering. Burberry describes the Chelsea on the website “Our slimmest trench coat, with narrow shoulders and a nipped-in waist. The fitted archive-inspired style is woven in our signature gabardine with a Vintage check lining. Wear it belted to accentuate the softly flared silhouette.”

The Waterloo on the other hand is a looser fit, and Burberry describes the Waterloo on the website “Our classic trench coat, cut to a relaxed, longline silhouette. Designed for layering, it is made in England in our signature cotton gabardine with a Vintage check lining and undercollar. The style is finished with raglan sleeves.” So, I believe that even the “right” size leaves room for layering.

Here in Finland winters vary a lot! Last year we didn’t once have really freezing weather, so never below 0 C / 32 F. It was mostly around 0 C / 32 F to 5 C / 41 F. That is a warm winter, no snow, and people were playing golf all year around.

This winter is another story! It was warm (like mentioned above) until new year, and then it got extremely cold. We’ve had approximately -10 C / 14 F down to -20 C / 4 F for over a month. And about 3 feet of snow. This means down jackets and shearling coats. One would freeze in a trench, even with layering. So, I’m planning to wear the trench as much as possible, but most likely most years it will be mid-April throughout November.
My old trench has softened but with the softening over time the fabric colour also faded ever so slightly-the first year I had it dry-cleaned re-proofed by Burberry (they recommend dry cleaning them just once a year believe it or not-which is another reason to buy Navy IMHO!-I have an Aquascutumn beige trench and i just wear it a couple of times on the subway and the cuffs look filthy so I just throw it in the washing machine which is NOT recommended !).
After the 1st year I just got it dry cleaned locally.
Bear in mind my original trench is very old now and they could well have changed the factory or fabric slightly over the years so dont judge by my experience.
The Chelsea I mentioned is brand new and as yet unworn so I cant comment on that.
Personally I DONT like the Waterloo as a style-it just feels more old lady somehow (and I'm not young!) I'd buy that style for my Mother in Law or advise it for someone with a large bust, Where as the the Kensington and the Chelsea feel more fashionable but still chic.
As you are very petite I would not recommend the Waterloo for you despite the extra space for layering.
But again thats just my opinion

Thanks again for your comments and sorry for the late reply! :flowers:

I’m looking for a very traditional style, and I know that the style might give “old lady vibes”, but I like the challenge. I’m planning on wearing this coat with “young style” pieces, as I like the mix. For example, with leather leggings and sneakers, it might look cool to have a complete contrast with an “old lady coat” I just turned 37 last week, but I'm a quite playful and young spirit, and I like to experiment with fashion.

So, this is a matter of personal style and personal preference. Opinions will always be many, which is good! And very good that Burberry has a range of different styles and cuts in the heritage collection, to suit and please the most of us  My post was mainly about what is my correct size (as I had already decided on the style), BUT I appreciate all discussion around this topic!

Hello there! I would recommend going with a traditional color that you can make playful with accessories or a bag. It is a HUGE investment. You wanna make sure your cost per wear is super low. LOL - Also, if you live in a place where you nee layers, you may want to size up. - I lived in a place where ir snowed A LOT. I sized up so that I could wear layers. Now that I live in a warmer place, I sold my coats and bought them again true to size. --- Pictures for reference. --- Can't wait ti see what your choice was.

Hi!

I have a heritage Trench situation. I live in Finland (north Europe), where the market for luxury goods are limited. I have been wanting a Waterloo trench to replace my Kensington (old model, UK4/US6, unfortunately damaged during a wash, which I’ll post later). I kind of like the Waterloo more due to the classic rounded shoulders and the longer length. However, I’m wondering about the proper size for me in Waterloo, though I once was fitted for the old Kensington.

I’m 160cm and 48kg, that is about 5 feet 3 inches and 105.8 pounds. So quite tiny. I have now two sizes of Waterloo at home to try on.

Waterloo is very long, and as mentioned, I kind of like it. I like the classic, a bit loose trench as a protector from the world. I’m still wondering does it look stupid on me and would appreciate other’s views.

Then there’s another twist in the plot:

The price in Europe for Waterloo is 1850 euros. I managed to get a UK4/US2 -10% off as a first time buyer discount at My Theresa -webshop, so for 1665 euros. Then a local department store with limited stock had one size larger, UK6/US4 at -20% discount, so for 1480 euros. So, the price difference is 185 euros, which I think is quite much. I’m by no means rich, but I’m not putting my last pennies towards a coat. When making a big purchase like this, the coat should also feel like “your own”.

I think the smaller and more expensive is better, but what do you think? Should I take the larger and save 185 euros? The larger is 2cm wider across the chest, measured laid flat, and about one inch longer.

Having both coats at home I made a photoshoot with different garments under. Especially really thick ones! I thought about putting makeup on for this, but then I thought nah.. I’m working remotely due to the pandemic and I’m used to looking like a zombie. I promise, makeup does wonders on my plain Scandinavian looks! :graucho: I’m using my Apple Watch as the camera button, hence the weird poses and creepy staring into nothing, (and some very unflattering angles!) but I decided to keep this authentic and not cover my face :P

The first 4 collages are of the smaller one (I have written the sizes in the pics), and the last 2 of the larger one.

  • Any thoughts which size is better? (the sleeves will be shortened anyway)
  • And how much would you let the price difference control the decision?
  • How about the length in general?
Thank you SO much for any input! :flowers:
