Hi!

I have a heritage Trench situation. I live in Finland (north Europe), where the market for luxury goods are limited. I have been wanting a Waterloo trench to replace my Kensington (old model, UK4/US6, unfortunately damaged during a wash, which I’ll post later). I kind of like the Waterloo more due to the classic rounded shoulders and the longer length. However, I’m wondering about the proper size for me in Waterloo, though I once was fitted for the old Kensington.

I’m 160cm and 48kg, that is about 5 feet 3 inches and 105.8 pounds. So quite tiny. I have now two sizes of Waterloo at home to try on.

Waterloo is very long, and as mentioned, I kind of like it. I like the classic, a bit loose trench as a protector from the world. I’m still wondering does it look stupid on me and would appreciate other’s views.

Then there’s another twist in the plot:

The price in Europe for Waterloo is 1850 euros. I managed to get a UK4/US2 -10% off as a first time buyer discount at My Theresa -webshop, so for 1665 euros. Then a local department store with limited stock had one size larger, UK6/US4 at -20% discount, so for 1480 euros. So, the price difference is 185 euros, which I think is quite much. I’m by no means rich, but I’m not putting my last pennies towards a coat. When making a big purchase like this, the coat should also feel like “your own”.

I think the smaller and more expensive is better, but what do you think? Should I take the larger and save 185 euros? The larger is 2cm wider across the chest, measured laid flat, and about one inch longer.

Having both coats at home I made a photoshoot with different garments under. Especially really thick ones! I thought about putting makeup on for this, but then I thought nah.. I’m working remotely due to the pandemic and I’m used to looking like a zombie. I promise, makeup does wonders on my plain Scandinavian looks! :graucho: I’m using my Apple Watch as the camera button, hence the weird poses and creepy staring into nothing, (and some very unflattering angles!) but I decided to keep this authentic and not cover my face :P

The first 4 collages are of the smaller one (I have written the sizes in the pics), and the last 2 of the larger one.

  • Any thoughts which size is better? (the sleeves will be shortened anyway)
  • And how much would you let the price difference control the decision?
  • How about the length in general?
Thank you SO much for any input! :flowers:

Hei Christa!
I would definitely go for the smaller one. I think, the less bulkier the better for tiny persons (I am also tiny ). And the smaller trenchcoat fits really good on you. I think, if clothes are too oversized it can look like little-girl-playing-dress-up-in-mums-clothes. --> if you are 5''10 it is a whole different story.
The money aspect: 185,-€ money is a lot, BUT 1480,-€ spent on something, that doesn't fit perfectly, is wasted money, in my opinion. Take the smaller on, love it and use for the next 20 years.

Thank you for your comment! I love it! I think so much alike! I always use this phrase “little-girl-playing-dress-up-in-mums-clothes” as an example when balancing between “oversized” and “too large”. My best friend is very used to the question “can I pull this off as oversized, or does it look like little-girl-playing-dress-up-in-mums-clothes?” :P Same goes for sunglasses and regular glasses.

However, I’m not very strict with the belief that a my-sized person could not pull off ANY oversized items, but it really depends on the garment. It's a balance. For example, if there’s volume and length, it might be bad, but a shorter oversized jacket might look good with tight pants. Regarding the Waterloo it’s also meant to be a loose fit, so even the right size is a bit loose. And Burberry states on their website that Waterloo is meant for layering. The smaller size here managed to cover some of my thickest clothes! So, it passed an important test :graucho: That is important, as a coat like this should be worn a lot! I'm actually planning on wearing it for 20-30 years! And quitting buying coats, as a trench like this is all one needs, which makes it also a environmentally sustainable choice (all the arguments I have for myself to justify this purchase ;)). Living up north I of course have separate winter coats, but for a spring/fall coat, a Burberry trench should be enough. And having a fabulous coat like this, I'd want to wear it all the time

I hope I would not need even a smaller one, as UK2/US0 is extremely rare, I don’t think it’s available in any European web shop. And I was fitted as a UK4/UK2 in the old Kensington, and I’ve read here on the forum that these newer ones run a bit smaller.

I’ve noticed, when posting a question like this, of course the other TPF:ers don’t know one’s personal style. I am actually quite playful regarding style, and I am quite confident, and can pull off almost anything (if it’s OK to say myself, not meant to be too “braggy”). I love fashion! BUT I want my trench to look good and not be too big! I also love classics (obviously), but then it’s fun to mix them with something quirky. The Minna Parikka “Raw” heels, with mis-matching sushi-details, in that one picture for example, they look SO good with any black dress or LBD, or with skinny blue jeans and a plain white t-shirt

Also, your thought on the money aspect, spot on! I’m making a huge purchase, so it needs to be perfect. I should be grateful for the -10% off, as many online retailers have brand exclusions, and for example at Net-a-Porter their promo codes do not include Burberry.

So as a conclusion, you gave me affirmation I needed!:flowers:

You are so right with this point. Quoting my old math-teacher: "It depends on".

Thank you for bringing Minna Parikka back on my mind. When I was years ago with my former Finnish boyfriend in Finland I was absolutely fallen in love with her shoes --> going straight to the MP website.

Oh, you've been here! Cool! Many have not  Minna Parikka is an extremely talented designer, but unfortunately she wanted to do something else for a change, and (smartly) decided to quit while on top. This was all over the news in Finland in the beginning of November 2020. And as expected, sales went through the roof! And second hand items' prices went up with it! The webshop was closed late December, but then the company announced that there's one final batch coming in February 2021!

Hello Christa,
I think the smaller size fits better! And like tsching_k said, its not worth saving 185€ if the coat does not fit perfectly. I'm also thinking about purchasing the waterloo, i just love the look of a long trenchcoat. How easy are burberry trenchcoats to care for? I'm a bit worried about getting stains on the light fabric

I also think that the smaller size looks better. However, the argument of having the coat for 20 years... how can you be absolutely sure that you will never gain weight?

Thank you too for your comment! :flowers: In my long original post I mentioned that I had/have a Kensington that got ruined during a wash, and I'm about to make a warning post about it, but briefly; I read some instructions on TPF that it could be washed at home with water, and my Kensington did not look the same again :crybaby: It was devastating then, as the coat was new, so it was a lot of money wasted. However, then Burberry launched Waterloo, which is more my style. I love the VERY classic look with the rounded shoulders :heart:So now I have mentally written the whole incident off as "life happens" and we learn  From now on I will take my coat to a reputable dry cleaner only!

Thank you also for your comment! :flowers: Well there's a motivator to eat healthy and exercise :graucho: Jokes aside, of course anything can happen. I know my grandma, who had my body type (probably I have inherited many her genes) never gained weight easily. But if something were to happen, for example some illness that would cause weight gain, maybe just then change plans as we go on in life ;) ..maybe I'd donate the coat to a smaller relative, if the coat has many years left  So, 20-30 years is the initial plan, from a style perspective, and it can be changed according to circumstances in the future

It was never my intention to sound mean or condescending or harsh. I didn’t mean that you will gain weight! You look beautiful. It was more of a rhetorical question.
To come back to the original question, I think both sizes are fine, but I chose the smaller one, since it looks more tailored, which is the style of this coat. It’s not a flowy trench. As others have mentioned, if you plan to wear it a lot with heavy sweaters, maybe the bigger size is better.

I think the smaller size looks like it fits much better, lays better, looks more tailored to you, and is far more flattering. The larger size to my eyes looks too big for you... sort of adds more bulk.
