I actually have the cash to get a Birkin but it doesn't make sense for my lifestlye, investments, future expenses. So even though I'd love one I resist. Besides, it just wouldn't feel good to me right now to have that much money in a bag.

I can't imagine charging one because like others have mentioned if something comes up like a repair or a health problem you could be ruined. I know a family recently who had to declare bankruptcy because they kept charging things and the mother was sick and couldn't work for a few months. Very sad. :(

Seem like I have been waiting to have a H-bag from Hermes boutique all my life?!? But so what? Do I really need to spend that much money on a bag? You can also wait and try your luck with a good vintage Hermes with reasonable price. Or like others said, you might develop a different taste later on and one day find out that you don't need this bag anymore.

So funny re the men comments
so true!

Your young , put those pennies away save up for that birkin,
Have a H Fund and tuck spare money away

I saved for four years Mai and that bag means so much to me some 25 years later
It was truly worth waiting and drooling and saving

Treat yourself every now and again to something small scarf bracelet etc

That birkin will come along in time trust me it means so much more when it does

I hate the idea of debt. Except for emergencies (e.g., I accidentally bought too many bags :cursing:... or a loved one goes to the hospital), a house, or a car (although I prefer to pay cash for cars), debt isn't okay with me. It's far too dangerous. I strive to live below my means, rather than above them.

Much as I love H, I'd rather wait for my beloved Birkins and Kellys until I have enough in the bank to pay cash for them, AND have emergency funds AND savings as well.

I agree with Lilach. There are things that can come about that are absolutely necessary and you may need the credit for that and it would be awful if you had blown it on a handbag.
At the end of the day - even though we're talking about these bags as if they were the center of our lives - a Birkin is just a bag. A marginal thing, as Lilach has correctly pointed out. The monies we pay for these bags are frivoulous. They are an absolute luxury. It's great if you get an unexpected bonus or somehting or have indeed saved for this bag. To buy it on credit is somehow the wrong way to go about it.
Stay with us and wait. You might even find that your taste developes (as it has for many members of this forum) and that you might desire a different model.

^^hello has given you very wise advice here, as much the birkin is a luxury, it is only a purse and to jump into buy one, that is a very big deal. if you could plan to pay it off in three short months i could see that being practical but for 2 - 3 years, maybe you should start with a preloved one that is more affordable, it is just a purse after all and even though i am indulging so much now it is because i have worked so hard for many years and my grail bags are starting to come to mama.

if you can, try to resist instant gratification, it does feel very wicked to indulge but to have $$ in the bank is the best feeling in the world IMO.:smile1: best of luck which ever you choose though mai britt!

I agree, lilach. I would personally wait.

If I cannot afford it, I won't buy it.
(even if my Visa does have enough available
credit on it, to at least buy myself an Evelyne
or Picotin...I'll still wait.) :P

personally i think it is not worth it to go into debt for marginal things.just because of the what if´s

what if your car dies and you took a loan for a handbag
what if (g+d forbid) something healthrelated pops up

etc..

I agree with everyone else, I would not go into debt for a bag, a house yes, a bag no. You are saving which is the right thing and you will get your bag, you sound very well prepared.x

Basically to buy my birkins, I borrowed from my husband - who is my boss - so he advanced me the money and I paid him back in installments over the year. This works well for both of us - I start paying back once I have bag. I have absolutely no discipline when it comes to saving up! I wouldn't get out a bank loan for a bag even though people frequently do it for cars. But a car is more of an essential unlike a bag!
