Has anyone ever sold one ering in order to get a different one?

I cannot wait to hear about what you think. He has a GORGEOUS sapphire halo ring in his case, the halo is sapphire and squareish shaped. It is TO DIE FOR.

Everyone knows I'm strong proponent of haloing. Halo that baby and hopefully you will be content enough with the same diamond but different look to keep it and not sell it at a loss.

Well I talked to my husband and he was totally against the idea, but in a really afraid sort of way. It was weird, but it was also clear this ring must mean more to him than me. He was even against the idea of taking the wedding bands off it so I could at least wear them everyday.

So while it's not as exciting, my new plan is to take it to the jeweler and have the bottom of the shank fixed and I'm going to find out if I can switch the head to either a double prong four corner or those prongs that are sort of thicker and V shaped, and on four corners..to help give my stone a more square appearance. I'm normally 100% against 4 prongs for safety reasons, but I just realized I don't care about the safety of this diamond. It's insured and if it falls out someday, then I'll go get my dream diamond. And if it doesn't fall out, at least I'll be happier with how it appears.

I also know now I'll likely never get the chance to totally reset it, but I'm going to keep working on my husband to at least remove the wedding bands off the top and bottom so my stone isn't so lost in that wide looking band. That will also enable me to wear it with the wedding band I prefer to wear everyday.

We'll see. Thank you so much for all the helpful advice. It's so nice to have a sounding board to bounce things off of.

Sorry it didn't work out. I wouldn't lose all hope though. When my DD was born, I wanted a letter pendant for her name, but he got me something else because he said letter pendants were "tacky". Well, I never got over it , and 3 years later I told him I wasn't over it and still wanted a letter pendant, and I finally got it! So, if it's super important to you, I bet you'll wear him down over time.

ame - OMG, LOVE "Jewelery Dude" as you refer to him!!! I feel like I might have found my jeweler for life. Yay! I dealt mostly with his Nephew, but jewejer dude came out for a while to talk for a bit. Super awesome people. perfectly reasonable in price. And I oddly felt I could completely trust them! That's a RARE thing.

A halo is definitely out of the question. Putting a 1.5ct round in a halo on my tiny size 3 finger just looks silly...or at least to me.
So we have two options. The one I REALLY want is they told me they could do a cad and duplicate the diamond band I wear everyday (which I love more than words can say..it's 100% unique and unlike anything else I've ever seen..even jewelers compliment me on it's uniqueness) and add an 8 prong head to hold my diamond which would give it a more square look after they modify it a bit (see below). I love this idea because it'll make my diamond the centerpiece instead of disappearing in my thick setting it's in now. Plus the new head will help it have a more square appearance. And then I will still have a matching e-ring and wedding band set

As a back up plan they will re-shank the entire lower half of my current ring to fix the mess-up the other jeweler did, and they will still redo the head so at least I'll like it a bit better.

I'm enclosing a picture of a ring I saw while out today with prongs similar to what I'm hoping for. This ring was a .75 ct, so the prongs will look much smaller proportionally on my diamond. "Jeweler Dude" said he would re-head it with an 8 prong and add a little gold bead behind and in between the double prongs to achieve this look.
It's not ideal, but it might be the best compromise I can get from hubby, and I do think it will help. I'll have to see what he says on the first option, if he turns it down I'm doing the second one no matter what.

YAY!!! He has some pretty remarkable standards and he's pretty hard on his nephew ;) He expects perfection. He is the very first guy I have worked with that "gets" me. He doesn't think I am difficult or asking for the world. I just know what I want and expect, AND I say so. And I always have. I think they will do a great job!

I love that idea, those prongs are considered "fishtail" prongs. I love BOTH ideas. I hope your DH is on board with at least one. I was there with my friend Alicia the other day and she was going through the heads in a few stock books. She wants the twin prong head situation too with the tiny little prong tips.

I should have my wedding band from him any day now. I just approved it for casting last week.

Oh there is no choice. Hubby can yay or nay option #1, but at a minimum option #2 IS happening :p

Oh geee.... I never thought about that needing to be redone too! How exciting that you'll be getting it soon!

BTW, have your seen the thread "what do you do with your diamond ring while you're at the Gym?" I felt bad the first time I saw that..like NOOO..ame doesn't need to see that ;)
.

HAHAHA! I learned a valuable lesson. I should've probably read that first ;)

I had a few reasons for redoing my wedding band, but the majority was so that it would be lower set to not interfere with the wirework on the ering. But it was gorgeous and not very "Safe". The edges being so exposed have caused me to need to replace several stones, some more than once, and the sides stuck out and were majorly uncomfortable. I should have the smooth lovely one this week I hope.

I hope your DH goes for option 1. lol :)

So I've been emailing the jeweler and we are going to start with option #2 since it all needed to be done anyway. They can always use the new head on the new ring if DH ever decides to let me do it. (At this point I'm too afraid to ask. I don't like hearing "no" :nogood: he he he). And re-shanking my current ring needed to be done anyway, because those are my original wedding bands and if I ever get to reset my diamond, then the wedding bands will become a right hand ring.
This will give me some time to work on hubby, but be more content with my ring at the same time.
I emailed him this picture and he said he was 100% sure it was doable with the 8 prong head I liked the best (it had a flowy tulip-esque design). So I am going in tomorrow so they can take some measurements and order the head. I suppose the work will start shortly after that.
I'm also going out with DH on Friday night. Once I get him all liquored up, I'll ask about option #1:graucho:

skphotoimages, that ring is GORGEOUS. The band reminds me of the swing band from Tiff - so beautiful! I love it! The head of the ring also reminds me of Contessa's . . .the way the prongs are set, it makes the RB look like a cushion cut from afar!

YAY! I have my ring back. The but on a new head to help my round look less "round" and reshanked the bottom half of the ring (it didn't turn out as thick as I would like, but it's ok) and tapered it in.
My main complaints were that I'd rather have a whole different cushion diamond and a more vintage setting. Hubby wouldn't let me do either. Also I felt my center diamond was too large before
Here it is before:

And here it is now!!! The diamond looks much smaller looking straight down my hand from the side of the diamond. I like that. (here is a before and after)
banda22011-1.jpg

and here it is completed! HUbby asked me not to do the fishtail prongs (with the 3 little balls like my example pictures before)right off the bat, and to just start with the double prongs. They are a little longer than I'd like when you see them in photos or through a loupe, but on my hand they are lovely. I can always add the third ball later. I also didn't really want the diamond to sit up higher, but it was the nature of this head. I'll adjust. All in all I am very pleased with the slight changes that make me happy but hubby still loves it too.

AND now that it's not buried in the old head (it was actually sunk into the metal) it actually has fire now!! My diamond was always full of brilliance and sparkle, but lacked colored flashes of light. Not anymore :-) It's hard to capture, but this photo isn't even close to what the eye sees. I guess I need to practice photographing jewelry :-)
