Has anyone ever sold one ering in order to get a different one?

I'm soooo sick of my round brilliant channel set e-ring setting. I'm not really attached to the ring or the diamond as none of them were my originals. AND we are in a very different place than we were when we bought it 5 years ago. We've been through a lot of bad stuff and I'm a very different person than I was. I tend to feel like some things carry that energy with them. This ring just has to go!
I thought about having the wedding rings unsoldered (they are white gold channel set diamonds, and they are my originals) and having a major jewelers error (get to that in a sec) fixed and maybe solder a gold band into the center for a right hand ring (and a way to add two tone into my life).
A few years ago I had to have my ring cut off and when I took it to a jeweler to have it put back together he just reattached the cut ends, not figuring for the lost gold) and made my ring a size 2.5. then in order to make it the correct size (4) he just stretched the bottom of the shank paper thin. Thats just one of many reasons I don't like my ring.
Anyhow, here are my options,
1)sell my diamond and because of the loss only be able to afford a smaller antique cushion diamond that someday I'll be able to halo. Just maybe not right away.
My current diamond is 1.55 ct with a 7.5mm spread. I think if I get 50% of what I paid for my diamond, I'll be able to afford a 1.25 cushion with maybe a 6.25mm spread.
2) reset my current diamond. I don't like rounds. I just got one because they are so brilliant. So I'd probably halo it into a very simple cushion shaped halo.
Has anyone ever been through this before or have any advice to give?
Here's my ring now:

Oh yeah..and my husband doesn't know I feel this way yet. I'm not sure what he'll say...lol.

I did px my old e-ring for a better one but that was not my original I'm actually on my third as when we first got engaged we had little money to pay for an e-ring, I'm from the UK & we don't tend to have very big e-rings here, my new one is a 1 carat brilliant solitaire & that is classed as not a bad size in the UK, I love some of the rings I see on here but I would probably get mugged if I wore something like that here lol.

I would probably get your diamond re-set as it's not a bad size but it all depends if that works out dearer than buying a brand new ring.

Yeah, I know I'm a bit backwards, but I'll probably go a bit smaller if I get an entirely new diamond. Mines just "too much" for me. If you saw me and saw my ring, you'd probably just assume it's a CZ. I'm not a flashy person, or dressed particularly well...lol. Jewelry is my weakness...the one thing I spend money on.

Reset and halo your current diamond. You'll find it hard to tell that it is round with a cushion shaped halo. It will be gorgeous!

Keeping your diamond will make it easier on your husband - I think that my husband would be imsulted if I sold my engagement diamond, but he hasn't had any trouble with resetting it.

We traded in my first ering with our jeweler when I upgraded a few years back. DH had no issue with it...

In your case, though, I think I'd keep your center stone and do the cushion halo. I think you'll be surprised by the difference!

I'm nervous to talk to him about it because that's just not something we should spend much $$ on right now. Given what we've been through though, I think he could accept the switch if it wasn't too much extra out of pocket. It isn't my original diamond, and I won't sell my original one..I'm saving it for my daughters.
Haloing it might be the best solution, I just know I'll be dreaming of an Antique cushion forever..until I get one..he he he.
I actually put a reserve on one at Good old Gold and am awaiting a video of it and a few others. The one I have reserved is my dream diamond, and one that I ~might~ have to dip into savings for (mind you this savings is for a house that may or may not ever be built (my husband wants to build it himself:shrugs:)...part of a 7 year plan (we are in year one)...we already have a perfectly fine house...I'd rather use I tiny portion for my dream ring). The others are ones I could afford with the sale of the diamond I already have.

I have to wait till tomorrow to go around to some jewelers and weigh my options cost wise.

^^ Keep in mind that resale on diamonds isn't great. At best you will get about 50% of what you paid, unfortunately.
Yes, I agree and am semi prepared. I bought my diamond really really well. Haggled my butt off. Because of that I'm hoping for 50%+ as opposed to the 30% that might be normal. If I'm offered 30%, there is no way I'll do it just on principle..lol. I have a number in my head and it's a pretty firm cuttoff.
I also have this little pretty I'd be willing to sell for an antique cushion. I wouldn't sell it for a reset though. There is something really special about this set that hasn't allowed me to sell it yet. I bought it UBER cheap with the intent to resell it, but like I said, it's like putting happiness on my finger when I wear it. Who ever owned it before me must have been a happy positive person. I even thought about resetting the 1ct OMC center stone, but can't bring myself to take this ring apart.

Maybe I should just have it resized and wear IT.

Personally I think you should just reset the center stone. You can scrap the current setting and stuff, but I would totally not sell your current stone because the loss isn't worth it.

I agree with Ahertz and Ame.

Upgrading will cost you at least another pile of $$$.

Looking at your current set, I'm going to be honest and say that your centre stone gets "lost" in that setting. Adding a halo.....in your fave shape a "cushion" will give you a much cleaner look and the illusion of having your beloved cushion diamond.

I wouldn't go looking for jewellery to trade in......I'd suggest re-setting what you have and using the value of what your current ring is towards funding the re-set.

Yeah, your probably right. I used some inheritance money for the upgrade to my 1.55ct RB with the intent that is was something I could love everyday and pass on to my girls in time. I guess selling it for a loss wouldn't be that bright. sigh.
I have no idea what to expect cost wise on going to a halo. I know ERD has one I like under $1000, I assume they will be much higher at a B&M store.
I'm going to ame's jeweler tomorrow to see what he has to offer (and not from Vatche..lol).

LOL, yea avoid that one. lol
:lolots::lolots::lolots:
Let me know how it goes! You should tell him that too--that based on my experience with them, you want a ring from a brand who doesn't suck. He might just chuckle.

I almost fell off my chair LOL
I cackled. At my desk. LOUDLY.

Yeah, I'm not attached to it at all...lol.
My husband purposed spur of the moment with a ring he was wearing at that moment. Then we bought be a plain band because we were flat broke. Then several months later we bought my first diamond ering. Five years later we bought my current diamond.
But I think everyone here might be right and haloing might be the way to go.
I'll update everyone tomorrow after I talk with a jeweler.
