I use leather bags in the rain.
Leather should be able to cope with a few raindrops; otherwise, it's not really fit for purpose.
I would even use some suede, to be honest.
I find suede and sheepskin are actually fine in the rain, as long as they don't get muddy/dirty and you accept that they will have rain spots on them for, possibly, weeks at a time.
Eventually, the spots (usually) go and if not, depending on the style and colour of the item, it can actually add to character.
There again, I only tend to be out in the rain (with a bag) for short periods, these days.
So, it is less of a concern than it was (for example) when I had to sometimes walk for miles on end, in torrential rain, as a student.
