From what I see in the photos, I think your hair is beautiful. Both the cut and the color.
Too kind, there’s nothing horrendous about it in the beginning it looked and felt like I could have paid a lot less. I don’t mind paying… eg I’ve paid tattoo artists $400-600/hour and works up to $1000 but I want my moneys worth.

so I assume you didn't go to the place that charged $200.....and you didn't trim yourself?
I actually trimmed myself (evened out the bottom and made it look less choppy) and no, never going to that place again. Most of the artists I was used to previously actually had moved onto other salons.

I am waiting for my hair to grow a bit longer then most likely will book with them.

I've been trimming my hair (just tiny bits, like a half inch) myself. I'm paying quite a bit for color and just don't want to double the bill. I'm keeping an eye on it. If it gets too unruly I'll pay her to cut it. But I've been kinda disappointed in the amount of time she spends when she cuts my hair. You read about these (very expensive) salons where they spend an hour cutting curl by curl. She cut my hair (same method) in about ten minutes one time.
So if I cut it (or have DH help me) I'll eventually lose my layers. But I've had that happen getting haircuts in the salon too.

Honestly I don’t mind paying, and for me I guess it’s not the extra stuff though that’s right, this lady didn’t spend that much time too. It wasn’t until after I complained that she did a bit more but the bar still fell really short imho from what the charges were… and I don’t (even precovid) ask for much. No water, tea, sparkling, alcohol (some places do serve), etc… the blow dry and styling aspect after is nice but because I don’t do that myself at home as much, I always want a cut that will be easy to maintain with products and fingers + normal blow drying (even though I did get myself the fancy Dyson one a few years ago) etc.

and most of the time they’ve delivered.

maybe it’s also because I’ve had really great cuts when I went to student days (dipetro for example, has that on mondays previously and a cut/color would cost $30-45 depending on length and complexity but I always walk out feeling and looking like a million bucks). I would stick with that but they also take hours I don’t have anymore to spare (3-4 hours as a teacher has to look over and they’re extra careful) and it’s only on mondays and yeah.

It sounds like I have similar hair and do the same thing as you. After a few of the pricey cuts where the stylist assesses and trims curl by curl, I started maintaining it myself during Covid. I figure I know my hair best and know which curls may just be having a bad day, and which ones chronically misbehave and need to be trimmed. Honestly, my own results are no worse than the salon, but I have yet to find a stylist that does my hair curly in a way that I love. Good luck.

I hate coming out of the chair being indifferent to a new cut, or even worse, feeling not heard when you try to express what you think is wrong. Good luck finding a new stylist.

ETA: I see this is over a year old. Hopefully you've found your new stylist!

I went for color this week and made my next two appointments as my stylist is going to be taking maternity leave. She asked if I wanted cut or just color. I said for now just color. I confessed that I'd been trimming it a bit myself. She just said "it's your hair"

I haven't touched the layers, just the bottom. Sounds like you trim your layers sometimes?

I go in cycles with layers. I don't like how I look with them, but most stylists all but insist that I need them. Now that I hold the scissors, my upkeep of layers is based more on whether that area needs attention. I should be more consistent in my approach, but most of the time my hair is up or at least pulled back from my face, which makes it easier to get away with my own results. I'm still working from home full-time, and my hair has always suffered from what I call benign neglect. I try not to do too much with or to it, and it (for the most part) rewards me by looking OK.
