Hi all,

I just got my haircut and I can’t tell if I’m unreasonable or not with my unhappiness.

For context, I’ve been trimming my own hair prior, but decided it’s safe to get my hair cut at the salon I usually go. When I do a full balayage plus haircut it can be near $300 and around $350+ with tip (it’s been almost two years and my memory is fuzzy). This time I decided to go partial and it would be $250 I thought (later on the receipt it says $225 and she gave a slight discount to $200).

I’m very easy going (or so I think, tell me if I’m wrong) but I thought I would try bangs and also just wanted my hair few inches shorter. I’m told that bangs for me wouldn’t be good plus it’s a lot of maintainence (not sure why this matters but ok).

We decided gradual layer in the front to add volume and she told me how she’d do the balayage.

to be clear, I have NO ISSUES with the balayage or the fact that we went for layer in front instead of bangs. I may have a style in mind but ultimately I would trust the professional to know what’s best for my face. I’m not asking for anything more than a good haircut that fits my face and if bangs won’t work because of genetics then sure.

what I have issue with is the bottom. When she was done, it felt like the bottom was not clean and heavy. I told her that it looked heavy and she went ahead and cut it really quick. I’ve had my hair cut multiple times and people always do it piece by piece—she did it in two big pieces and this time, she didn’t even bother putting up any of my hair, so she couldn’t keep track of the sections.

I was obviously unhappy about this and she kept insisting she wants to do right by me but I got this passive aggressive vibe and of course I couldn’t tell her this. I just pointed out my hair being uneven imho and choppy. She insists it’s even.

It looks even to me, but my stylist does it like you said, piece by piece, and I don’t think you should have to point it out. Especially bc of covid, I tend to tip 20%, but I’d also perhaps scout out a new hair place. Depends on how much I like the stylist (whether I just give her the benefit of the doubt that she was only having a bad day). Having said that, finding a new stylist is a pain, and it looks good, so maybe there were just those two chunks? I’m sorry thta you have to go through this; it’s not a nice feeling. Hugs

edit: to be clear, I think your ends look like mine when I get a layered choppy cut with movement, aka, my usual.

I’m a huge fan of layers for volume but at the end of it I want it to be straight, I guess maybe now reflecting back I should have made that more clear. I can’t remember if I tipped 15 or 20% but I know i tipped in the end.

I don’t have a regular stylist… I tend to only cut my hair once a year and then let it grow out, because I favor long hair and because I’m a bit lazy. It’s also why I’m willing to pay a couple hundred to few hundred for cut because I want a solid one. I had this lady with the Todd dipetro that did my hair and you can tell she was really on it. Felt like a million bucks afterwards and that feeling lasted a year so unfortunately by the time I went back she graduated.

I also had somewhat of an issue with my stylist charging me for a Deva cut (dry cut for curly hair) and doing it very fast, rather than piece by piece which is supposedly what they do. I said something to her and she did spend more time this last visit. I think your hair looks nice. Is this your regular stylist who you intend to keep using? If so, I'd probably tip 20% or close to it. If you intend to find someone else, then maybe tip what you really feel. If you're really unhappy, nothing. If you're somewhat disappointed maybe 10-15 percent.
But this has already happened so I assume you've already made your decision about the tip and now you're checking with us?

It was awhile back and I can’t remember what % I tipped but I definitely tipped 10% minimum (my floor even when I’m unhappy).

I don’t plan to go back. I don’t think it was horrible but I don’t feel like that was what is fair for what’s charged.. I can go to a $20-50 haircut place and get the same result if that makes sense…

funny thing is I’ve had better for that price range with students studying at places like dipetros.

Based on the picture, I think the cut is alright. It might not be what you expected but it looks even to me, maybe it's not that bad.
Oh yeah, it’s alright kinda like (imho) $20-45 worth. Definitely not in the couple hundred zone.

if I went to the local shop— sure. This is more outfitted as high end, hard to get appt, etc.

not a walk in vibe which is what that haircut was, on a scale of ok/alright to nice to omg Oscar worthy I was expecting nice for that price.

$200 a no for me. and your hair would be easier to cut than my curly hair.

Funny thing my hair naturally is curly, when I was a baby… then the weight of it pulls it down. When I had chemo and lost all of my hair, it grew back curly to begin with but over time and length it gets straightened more.

I rarely cut my hair more than once a year. The expectation is short and for it to grow out long nicely. Hard to describe but generally it’s worked well for me in the past except for this instance.

the end imho was too choppy and it’s similar to when pple ask what’s the difference between a grade A fake and the real thing. Subtle but I can tell the difference.

I used to have a trim every 3-4 months....now it's more like 6 months.

I got a $15 haircut. The person who cut it had half of her head shaved. When she asked if she could use the shave it all the way up I didn't know how short it would be. Oh well. Sticks up on right side and back pretty bad.

From what I see in the photos, I think your hair is beautiful. Both the cut and the color.

I think your cutting is fine . May be you have your style in your mind so that could be the reason of your unhappiness.

My hair finally grew out and I got it trimmed.

new members saying it’s fine, I am happy to take your $200 plus and cut your hair because I can do the same thing :idea::flowers:
