I currently have two high end bags (Chanel/LV). The Chanel I've had for a year but have only used it maybe a 1/2 dozen times! The LV is the SC bag (all leather) which I recently purchased on Fashionphile through thier layaway. I put the downpayment on my CC and the balance was paid off by selling off almost my entire collection of bags (except the Chanel of course). I thought I'd rather have 2 or 3 exquisite bags rather than a few mid-designer bags. I've been slowly purchasing other bags such as RM and AW to use more like every day bags but why don't I just snap out of it and just use these darn bags? That's what they're meant for, to be used! So why am I having this guilty feeling of owning them? I guess I'm just afraid if I use them all the time they'll get ruined. :-s:help:

If they're easily soiled/damaged due to color or material then I can see your hesitance to use every day. But if that's not the case, then I say use them, that's what you bought them for.
I can't understand people who buy something and then save it for a special occasion. I'm the opposite; I tend to use my things very soon after purchasing.

I understand you perfectly.
As a bag collector, I have bought very expensive bags that I planned on carrying from time to time.
Only trouble is....I spent so much money on them that I am scared.
I fear they might get scratched or stained, or snatched.....well you know the drill.
As a result, except for my LV Mono Speedy which has seen it all and and is still in perfect condition, my high end bags are sleeping in their boxes.....:shame:
Of course, no way am I going to sell them....We never know.....tomorrow I might take them out.
Anyway, I learnt my lesson....No more bags that cost a fortune!

I think we fall into 2 camps, those that keep high end for special occasions and those (like me) who buy nice bags and use them no matter what on a regular basis. I try to look after them, but I'm not obsessive, and I accept that they will show wear and tear after a while.

I would try using just your Chanel/LV for a month and see how you feel. If its too stressful, you have your answer. Buy something else for regular use, then decide if you want to keep your Chanel/LV for best or not. If not, sell them and move on. :smile1:

I have owned several high end bags I liked the idea of, but the reality was they weren't for me and I didn't use them, so they found a new loving home. Is this a possible reason why you don't use the bags?

I am guilty of this, too.
I had a small collection of LV and Chanel (and sold a lot) but always seem to gravitate towards my cheapy vintage coach and MbMJ cross bodies. I think I've found my "style".

My premier bags are heavy! I know there are plenty of ladies here that can wear the Chanel GST all day and everyday but I find it's just too heavy.

I think you are still finding your "style" and the Chanel and LV just seems soo glamourous but maybe it doesn't fit your lifestyle?

I have found that there is a certain price point at which I will regret a bag acquiring wear and tear and eventually wearing out. Any bag over $2,500 or so makes me feel that I cannot put that bag on the ground, I cannot use that bag in the rain, I cannot get dirt on that bag, I cannot scuff it in anyway, etc. So I don't buy bags in that price range anymore. I have learned my lesson the hard way. (I have several very high priced bags sitting in my closet that I do not use)

I now have a lot of coach bags which I consider disposable and easily replaceable, and a lot of balenciaga bags, which are under my "stress" price point and I am willing to wear everyday. I have bought these bags over many years and they are in various states of wear and tear.

I will never pay more than $2,500 for a bag under any circumstances, but that is an arbitrary number and is just my arbitrary stress price. I simply would never use any bag enough to justify a bag that is $5,000. I also would not think that bag was worth the money, but that is a matter of my income level, my taste, my lifestyle, and my values etc. It is a personal opinion of mine nothing more.

Hi sdkitty,

Actually the Chanel is black and the LV is Jasper (a maroon-ish color) so color is not an issue. I can't understand it either but I want to be more like you!!

Just the other day I mentined my dilemma to one of my best friends and she has an LV mono speedy....she said to just sell the SC and buy the mono speedy and be done with it-lol! It is a great knock around bag and if it gets wet or dirty, you just wipe it off!

I'm like you, I take care of my bags weather they're high end or not but I'm definitely a little more paranoid with the high end bags.

I just keep grabbing the lower end bags and I feel that if I didn't have those in my possession then I'd have no choice but to use the others! I should sell the lower end bags because I almost feel as though if I sold the high end bags, I'd just use that money and buy a bunch of lower end bags....will that make me happier in the long run or will I kick myself in the butt and say 'for the same $$ I could have held onto those designer bags'? KWIM?

I hear you! Luckily, the SC bag I bought was less than retail because it was pre-owned so I at least saved some money that way but it was still more than $2500. So much $$ for one bag!

Yes, I'm very guilty of this!

I do have fears of getting a permanent ugly scratch or having something sticky spill or splatter on my $$$$ bags. On the weekends, I'm more concerned with weight because I'm out and about with the little one :D

I also worry about having nowhere clean to rest my handbag...obviously this just means I ought to stop buying any more $$$ bags...must use whatever I have and let them get some actual wear n' tear; very real wear n' tear.

Just be careful when using your bags
You should show your bags the love they deserve! I mean, you bought them to use them. & over time if your Chanel starts to show some wear just send her off to the spa.

I am totally guilty of spending too much money on one bag on occasion. :smile1::shame:

I learned my "stress" price the hard way remember, by overspending. :p:D

I have a python gucci bag sitting in my closet, a gorgeous alexander mcqueen clutch in my closet that I treat more like a museum piece than an accessory, and a judith leiber evening bag sitting in my closet that I have used once and am afraid to use, because I am afraid of losing a stone on the bag.

So....I think I can relate to your thread! :p

Omgosh, I can SO relate to this!
I'm sitting here as I type, contemplating selling two Chanel bags, one that has never been carried and the other one less than half a dozen times. I'm constantly reaching for my less expensive bags while the more expensive ones sit in the cabinet.

I'm always afraid someone might spill something on one while we're eating, or try and steal one while I'm shopping. I'm so paranoid and I'm starting to think the expensive bags might not be for me. I've been through this cycle before and I thought I'd learned my lesson. I love the Chanels and LV's (and I do carry the LV's quite often) but for some reason, I'm constantly reaching for the Coach's and AW's. I just seemed a lot more relaxed when I carry them.

Glad to know I'm not the only one!:smile1:
