Does anyone feel that their tastes change with age? I'm in my mid 20s. 5-7 years ago, I'm into bags with more hardware, "bling", and color. Now that I'm older, I like simplicity. I don't like hardware on my bags anymore nor monogram bags, and I grew out of colored bags such as pinks, reds, and blues. I'm more into nude shades now.

It's kinda of wasteful, because I am selling a lot of bags I used to love. Now I'm wondering if I should tone down on bag shopping because my tastes will change again. I used to think that expensive bags are worth it because you can wear it for years. Not if your tastes change haha.

True! I took a look back and thought about my life as a baglady - a lot has changed:

- Childhood&early teens: I adored my aunts' Mulberry bags and mostly carried a mini backpack.
- Ages 18-25: Sporty, big bags made of canvas. Also, unknowingly, I also owned a nylon fake Lady Dior and a couple other high end bags.
- 25-30: Longchamp nylon bags, PU bags with a very simple design. Also lots of Guess came into the picture, especially very loud clutches and wallets.
- 30-35: First real leather bags, first designer bags. Slouch very much IN. Still into the sporty/simple designs like Mulbery Antony and DKNY canvas tote, but also some more frilly, girly bags.
- 35-> More yearning after sleek, very simple but yet very full-on design. Longchamp Roseau, Modalu Pippa Brogue, Lumi Supermarket etc. Also the first small everyday messenger bags. More interest in SLG, especially wallets. Moving onto designer jewelry and scarves...

We'll see what the future brings. Probably a lot more bags and accessories! And maybe that perfect hobo as well. :smile1:

It's good to get rid of things you don't love anymore; maybe someone else will treasure them. Change is good, and recycling is even better.

It's normal to have your taste and style changes through the years. I used to go through phases of high consumption (especially when I transition into a new life phase - new job, parenthood, volunteering, etc.). It used to be an excuse for me to go on a spending spree and the "Must Haves" lists were always top of mind when I shop. Now, I'm in my forties and I've learned a lot about what I really like and what I'm most comfortable in spending when it comes to fashion. I've made plenty of costly mistakes but I've also learned from them and hope to not make the same ones again. There are some items that I have acquired over the years that are very costly (at the time of purchase) but I have used them often and still in love with them. Would I purchase the same identical items now? Probably not.

I think it's fine to buy an expensive quality designer item as long as you get your money's worth. That means using it and enjoying it. Don't have it sit in your closet because you are afraid of damaging it and decreasing its resale value. When you grow out of it, give it away or sell. Don't expect to make money out of it.

Oh, yes. About every 9 years for me--taste alters slightly.
For foods, clothes, decor, bags, etc.
I roll with it. And rid myself of what isn't beautiful or useful any longer.

There are things which endure my changes, which I have kept--can't pinpoint exactly why.
Probably because they strike a chord deep in my being, which never wavers.
I am familiar with that chord's tone, now, & can select big investments to satisfy it. So they won't irritate me in just a few months.

However, I don't view bags as needing to do this. They aren't forever things.
I enjoy them now. They are fun & beautiful. But, they expire in time. Then go.
And new ones come. This is inevitable, imo. And healthy.*
And worth more than monetary amounts to preserve as part of my life process.

Hope helps.

definitely, I loved logo bags when I was younger. ridiculously wanted EVERYONE to know what brand bag I was carrying. While I still like a logo every now and then, generally speaking, no longer for me. Prefer leather bags with little to no outward indication of designer. but structured and a lot of WOW factor!

I'm prob lucky, what I liked is what I like (I have bags I bought as a teen) and I like all sorts but even I go through phases. I gave my Jackie Gucci (2005) to my Niece (who is tiny) I cannot believe I carried that around everyday, it seems evening bag size to me now and I was trying my darling XL Ivory YSL Majorelle (2009/10) today, it feels as large as a piece of luggage but it will still be great for times I need to carry a spare change of clothes for after work.

Now that my kids are older (11 & 17), I have really been carrying and buying the mini bags. I've pretty much decided to get rid of most of my larger bags. My back (I have scoliosis) thanks me for it. I have also gotten out of the mentality that I have to carry designer and have been looking at the contemporary brands as well as old standards like Dooney and MK in all leather. I don't ever forsee myself going back to big bags. I guess that my style changed at just the right time.

I have also been more and more interested in luxury SLGs and have a few on my wish list which I will also tackle this year. I can't wait to see how my handbag collection eventually evolves.

Same here with the logos - used to think they were the epitome of cool but now it's a big no-no!

Changes in taste hopefully for the better, and standards go higher not lower. In the past I could get carried away with quantities over quality, but now not anymore.

I've gone back to loving leather backpacks! Granted, the first incarnation was questionable, and this time around its Italian Vegetable tanned leather and gorgeous, but still. I'm leaving other bags at home! I rotate about every one to two years. Like a serial monogamist or something.

In just five years my taste has changed. My first expensive bag was a bright pink coach logo bag which I loved. I also had a bright green logo coach bag lol! I wanted my bags to stand out, but now I want them to compliment my outfits. I like burgundy, black, brown colored bags and I'm over logos on big bags. I don't mind them on small bags as I have an LV recital which I still love.
