Good Faux Tahitian Pearl Alternative?

I see a lot of these in China. I have NO knowledge of pearls whatsoever...so I never know what they are. I know for a fact that they are cultured freshwater pearls (China is a large producer) but they may undergo a dying process to achieve that permanent Tahitian shade or they are just that color to begin with....I have no idea.

Usually when I have visitors come to Shanghai to visit me, all they want to do is go to the pearl shops. These aren't cheapie mass produced pearl necklaces, they're great quality and really well made. I would check Ebay for good / high feedback sellers from China and see what the prices are. I'd rather get a real pearl that's dyed than an imitation pearl to begin with. Hope this helps!

Hahaha, I loved your post doreenjoy, so true and so many other famous ladies; first ladies, etc. Like I said I love gemstones and love studying them but what I wear may not be real or not always because my style is different now. I love unique designs. I also love vintage costume jewelry some of them are beautiful, I especially love Art Deco costume rhinestone pieces. Why not?

OP, I am also considering getting Tahitians from TPO, been thinking about it, may take me a few more months but I will let you know how it goes. Tahitians are my passion but I also had a costume pearl strand and got so many comments on that.

For the moment I am in my Swarowski phase, just some gorgeous pieces I love from their Spring collection but then I will get Tahitians from TOP dunno what yet, they have great monthly sales too.

Good luck with your choice, keep us posted please.

Coco Chanel wore fake pearls.

I rest my case.

Well said. I have good pearls yet always wear my fakes. Why? Because I use hairspray, perfume, and many other things that can destroy pearls when wearing them. Have you ever seen a damaged pearl. So sad. All the luster and translucency and things that made it beautiful are gone and it is ruined forever. Fake pearls can be very beautiful. I have some made from crystals that are very nice. I am afraid to wear my real ones, how can you enjoy that?

Don't rule out finding the real deal at a bargain price either. It's always a possibility. I found tahitian pearls with matching earrings at TJ Maxx for under $100.00 once when I was shopping in the US. I love them!

I saw this thread resurrected and thought I'd share the ones I ended up going with. They're too "perfect" for my taste (I prefer baroque for Tahitians) so they're quite obviously fake, but the coloring is decent. I really don't like the clasp on them and wish I could change it, but they don't offer a different one. I bought a "Tahitian" strand by a brand called "Pearlfection". I purchased them from Jewelry Television, but can't find any more on their site at the moment. I'll take a picture when I get home later and post it, but here is a stock photo for now.

Every year Landsu sends me two $50 gift certificates. I don't even shop there, the only time is with the gift certificates and I use them on extra people on my list. There is no minimum so I could spend $59 and the item would be $9. This year when I was in I noticed they had some very nice looking pearls in the darker colors. Some looked ordinary, I have issues with some of the grays looking like metal, I like more of an organic look and some had that look. I don't know how much they are and this is Landau not Lancini,
