I don’t know what’s involved with removing them, but you can get small metal letters and apply them to replace the ones you don’t want.

That could work, depending on what the owner's initials are (some letters are easier to cover with some letters). But I would let it be, personally, I think it will be hard to do work on it in such a way that it will look organic and will not attract extra attention to the initials.
Monograms are always tricky -- we had a bunch of silver passed down to us, and the monogram doesn't match our names. I love to use them, although there is a part of me that wishes there was no monogram. But it is what it is. I always wonder the same about getting my silver monogrammed -- would the eventual recipients enjoy it less because of it?
It was just a thought. The bag is gorgeous, and not worth the risk of damaging it.
I personally love to have my items monogrammed if I know they’re keepers - I monogrammed a Kelly on the inside flap and recently got a Mon Mono Speedy.

On a bag that age I’d definitely keep the initials. It’s a part of that bag’s history and I love that someone affluent (maybe a chic Parisienne lady in my imagination) carried it over 50 years ago. It would possibly have been her only bag, or her only good one and cared for accordingly. Given the age of the bag she may or may not be around any more so I’d let that part of her and the bags legacy live on. A modern monogrammed bag I’d be tempted to change, but brass lettering from the 60’s I’d definitely keep it!
Definitely leave the monogram as is! If anyone asks, it's a vintage purchase in its original, glorious condition.
Is it brass? I’ve read that Hermes used to do this type of monogramming in gold letters.

Its glorious as it is!! Maybe you could get a strap for it monogrammed with your initials, or your nieces' even, for that time WAAAAAY in the future when it is time for the bag(s) to relocate. Thanks for sharing this, its always wonderful to see these pieces, they have such a glow about them....
