GG Marmont matelassé mini bag versus the soon to be discontinued Disco Soho Bag?

Im still in love with the Soho's! Partially because I have 3 of them and can't wrap my head around then being 'out of style'! I will carry them regardless. I can't lie, I do like the Marmont collection because I've bee taking to the vintage looks lately! Idk... I hope this rumor is not true!

I like the bigger version of this matelasse shoulder bag. The price (980 euros) is really good for the size and finishing. These bags have even microfibre lining inside. What other luxury brand can compete with this price? I also think that pieces included in both matelasse and soho lines are timeless.

I just bought Disco in pink so I am not getting any of these new models any time soon. Current shades are too bright for me and that's my only complaint about the new bags. I miss the older dusty, powdery shades Gucci used to have but they are now phasing them out. Many other fashion houses have vintage pink and bordeaux for example this season. I wonder why Gucci chooses bright and light colors for Autumn/ Winter as these type of colors are normally part of SS line. It doesn't seem very likely that they would offer beige/ taupe/ dusty/ olive/ bordeaux colors in matelasse line next season then? For me the color of the bag ( how I like it, how it suits my wardrobe) is perhaps the most important quality of the bag.

+1 to that! I really don't get their colour choices. I've said elsewhere I'd love a dark, vintagey brown, or an oxblood tone on a Disco. The small matelassé bag colours of bright pink and yellow don't do anything for me at all. And the U.K. website appears to have sold out of all Discos except black. Maybe they are spreading rumours about its potential discontinuation to improve sales?? Would appear to be working!

I like all sorts of colours but most people like more subtle shades. I think Gucci's new brief is to attract attention in all sorts of ways (mostly the attention of a young 'fashionable' crowd). But fashion always swings one way and then the other, so once Gucci are left with all the brighter colours there will be a swing back again.

I still think that's a lot of money, it's not like they have to make and attach handles which are often the hardest thing to design/engineer and most labour intensive to make. But good point, Gucci's market is finding favour because of the price comparisons. I think both bags are very useful everyday bags

It is strange for a leather goods company but AM doesn't believe in seasons

Thanks again for your knowledge! So I guess there's hope that next season Gucci could introduce colors that other fashion houses won't. This does not seem to happen very often in the fashion world but 'doing your own thing' can be a good thing. But if it will affect sales in a negative way I am sure that they will choose another strategy.

i don't think I'll ever understand why the likes of Gucci want to attract a younger clientele- surely the older, fashionable lady (me!) has the bigger disposable income?? I'd happily buy several bags, in the right colours, though!

It's more about the bottom line and not about handbags. Economists reading the luxury market's figures (usually incorrectly) and designers doing what they're told by their business managers and parent companies.

The last CD's (Frida's) remit was phase out most GG-print canvas and 'entry level' items (called 'commercial pieces' by Gucci) and take Gucci to a new higher (quality) level. Unfortunately that didn't seem to work financially (perhaps bad timing with China's new laws prohibiting expensive corporate gifts etc) and Gucci's growth contracted further so Kering sacked her (and CEO partner). Instead they went the other way, to appeal to a more visible, younger crowd where obviously (Gucci think) quality and stealth status features (e.g. micro-fibre lining replacing real leather and suede, whip-snake instead of python, snake-print leather coat rather than real snake) don't matter so much, longevity included. The visible and social media savvy crowd has proved notoriously fickle in the past so expect a change of direction in another couple of years. Conversely, we see from TPF again and again, it's often younger people who demand very high quality and favour classic styles and colours.

See past the sequins, bright colours and graffiti you'll see Gucci still produce fantastic quality and beautiful pieces. Past the 'crazy' pieces there are also classic versions in wearable colours. I find AM's shoes so much more wearable than FG's, already bought some fine jewellery that I hardly take off, and like some of the less whistles and bells RTW and 'bits' (loving the big hats this season). Even though I haven't bought a bag attributed to AM (although let's not forget he was head of accessories under FG :smartass:) I do like some of the designs and can wait 'till the right combo comes along.
