construction quality in the US is also not always very good - sometimes when i'm over there i get the feeling things are so flimsy - walls, floors, etc... same in canada. i remember one of the apartment buildings in lived in looked like 'brick', but it was actually brick tile - imagine a normal brick now make it just as thick as a tile, that's what the building was covered in. if you knocked on it with your hand, it actually sounded kind of hollow. and then the rest was basically plaster, cardboard and wood. and lots of carpeting. and then you wonder why fires spread in basically seconds.
