Whether starting a new collection for the first time or curating an existing collection, we could all use some help! Most of us have a working budget that we keep aside for our discretionary purchases. I wish I could say I had unlimited funds but truth of the matter is I don’t. So I earn, save and then spend on things I love! And, REPEAT!

I thought it would be nice to have a separate thread to share our ideas on what works and what doesn’t work for everyone when curating their individual collections!

I can start off with things I have learnt:
  1. When starting a collection, identify a piece that you know you wear the most! It could be a pair of earrings or a ring or bracelet or necklace. Research, research, research! Whether by looking at mod shots, going into the store to try in person or researching on the longevity of the piece in terms of durability and wearability. When I started my collection, I wanted it ALL! I got a ring, then a bracelet and then a pair of earrings within a span of 3-4 months! I was like a Cookie Monster that could not be stopped! Bad strategy! I was everywhere and frankly, nowhere at the same time! Fast forward to today, most days I wear a pair of earrings, a watch and rings. Those are my favorite pieces!
  2. Start slow and steady! Give yourself time to realize whether you actually like the piece before adding another. Over time I realized I am not even a necklace person! Then why was I buying necklaces like I had half a dozen necks to wear them? 😂 My sweet spot is the four necklaces I currently own - a 10-motif, 16-motif and two pendants. I rotate and wear them a lot. I love having the flexibility that I can add up to 4 more necklaces (2 RG/YG and 2 WG) but just because I can , I won’t do it because I know I won’t wear them and end up rehoming or gifting them! Buy what you love works in theory but buy what you love and will actually wear a lot is how I am now able to keep my monstrous wishlist in check!
  3. You don’t need ‘complete’ sets! What? This coming from a die-hard matchy-matchy gal! But, hear me out. People often think sets mean having the entire set of earrings, necklace, ring and bracelet! Not really, for me two pieces make a set! So, I am happy if I can find sets of two but it’s not a deal breaker! The beauty of VCA pieces is that we can mix and match, and still look put together!
  4. Organization keeps me sane and on target! I am a data girl through and through! I have a working excel sheet with everything I own broken down by each category (e.g. Necklaces, Rings, Bracelets, Earrings and Watches) and also by design (Alhambra, Perlee, Frivole etc.). This helps me get a visual layout of my collection and identify any gaps that exist. Oh, and I also update the current prices next to each piece.
  5. No matter how carefully we curate our collections, our tastes evolve over time and what looks like a perfect collection at one point in time may not always be true! Modifications and adaptations are the true rules of the game! Case in point, I started with VCA stone pieces because I was enamored by the vivid colors. Nearly 7-8 years later I find they no longer work in my collection. I want pieces that I can wear and travel with without caring about whether it’s snowing, raining, humid etc. I love and appreciate the durability of solid gold and pave pieces so my current collection reflects that. My biggest irk is owning and not using something! I am NOT a collector! So my collection only includes pieces I wear a lot. I don’t hold on to pieces I have outgrown because they are a reminder of my ‘mistakes’. I would rather cut my losses and re-home them or gift them. I do a lot of the latter to close family members. They are happy and so am I seeing them wear those pieces!

In the end, it’s important to stay true to yourself! Not being swayed by what’s ‘popular’, ‘trending’ or ‘splashed’ on social media is so important! Never try to keep up with the Joneses. In fact the best thing you can do is gladly let your friends, neighbors and everyone else pass you in the race to accumulate material things! It’s not the quantity that matters but how well-loved your collection is.

Phew, I wrote a story, didn’t I? Call it the perils of my job!

Since this is a VCA forum, would love to know how you curate your VCA jewelry collection but honestly, this can apply to any collection in general! We could all benefit from each other’s learnings and experiences! And, add pictures of your favorite pieces please for us to drool over:loveeyes:

Sharing a few pieces from my current collection. Still waiting for a few more pieces to join before I am ready to share a complete ‘family’ pic! 😝

It’s hard to come behind perfection but here it goes.
1. I set my yearly budget for Jewelry and Handbags. I often review my bags and jewelry to determine where I see gaps and plan accordingly. Often times bag funds I shift to VCA as needed.
2. Serious struggle with liking everything I see on others yet have to remind myself to be practical and buy what I truly will wear. I know that I’m not a necklace girl never have been yet I do own one 10 motif and few pendants that I have to force myself to wear. I feel that few options are needed to tie together some looks but I’m mindful not to go overboard. So I have them on the list but not moving on them until I’m absolutely sure.

3. Bracelets and Diamond Studs are my favorite jewelry pieces. I prioritize my arms above all other jewelry items. I love having stacking options to play around with. I subconsciously have been building sets of at least two bracelets based on style, metal or stone combos. Now I have more to add but I feel winding down on Alhambra except for few SO I want to place. I have identified I need two Perlee pieces in same metal so I can have more variety.

4. When I love pieces not in my usual wheelhouse I add them to list and just pause. I want BTFR yet can’t decide between butterfly or Pave Frivole. I’m not sure which one I would wear more so for now I purchase nothing. This pause saves me from making costly mistakes.

@eternallove4bag I love this thread! I’m a total newbie to VCA. I don’t do bags. Jewelry and a few clothing pieces are my only luxury vice. One thing I have done this year trying cool myself down in between purchases is to think about what I wear every single day. I think, what pieces would I wear ideally with this outfit. Having two YG pendants to stack (zodiaque and frivole) and two Alhambra bracelets answers the question 95% of the time. The other 5% I want another bracelet. 😂 I don’t wear rings so that part’s easy. I also don’t like anything heavy in my ears, and I already have studs I love. I am eventually going to build out my white gold collection, but staying focused one metal at a time feels best to me, because my jewelry drawer feels more adequate that way.

Great and informative thread! Thank you for sharing all your beautiful pieces. I am fairly new to VCA and I am in a dilemma right now! I have a chalcedony 5m bracelet which I LOVE. I recently got the blue agate 5m bracelet. It was ordered and I did not had the luxury of choosing the shade of BA I would like. I sent it for adjustment immediately after saying yes to my SA. Ahhh, if i could turn back time, I wished I put it off and brought it home first to sit on it, because I find the shade too dark for my skin tone. I don’t know what I should do! I don’t find the same joy as I would with my other VCA pieces. I feel bad if I sell it off the second hand market. Could you all share if you have done that and how did you navigate this with your SA if they asks about a piece (That you have let go in the second hand market).

Thank you and lots of love!

Blue Agate is tricky as it’s a translucent stone so will always appear darker on skin. I would hold it depending on your plans for your collection. Are you looking to add additional YG Alhambra pieces to coordinate.

I hope to add the YG/WMOP 5m bracelet eventually, it is not on top on my list though. Holding it out seems like the best option, since I love the stone but not the shade. Perhaps I just have to find ways to style it and make it work :)

Love the advice given here and most of all love the eye candy. The last pic has my heart fluttering. Haven’t felt that type of flutter since meeting my DH or laying eyes on our angel after we adopted.

I realized I forgot to include the photos requested. I wear this exact set almost everyday! I love each piece so much and they are each very meaningful to me! The earrings are Tiffany Schlumberger and I got them for Mothers Day. To me they accompany this set perfectly. 3 flower frivole in yg. Zodiaque Virgo on 70cm trace chain. Alhambra bracelets in MOP and Carnelian.

Thank you for adding the pic of your beautiful and well-loved pieces @Swellgal That’s the kind of collection I want, one I wear to death and that gives me joy every time I wear those pieces! Looks like you have found your perfect sweet spot and know exactly what you want!

Hi @Glossyreactions thank you for the love and sorry to hear that your BA bracelet is not the shade of blue you were looking for. I have let go of pieces in the secondary market in the past but it’s been years after purchasing them. SAs understand that tastes change as do circumstances. Pieces that were once loved no longer inspire that same level of love! It’s not like buying a hard to get piece like the HP and turning around to sell it for profit. That is wrong on so many levels! But, if you genuinely outgrow a piece, you should be able to let it go without remorse or guilt or censure from anyone! Your money your rules if you are not stepping over others in any way!

I agree with @missie1 though to hold on to the piece for now. It’s too early. You might change your mind and regret letting it go.

Aww thank you @sweetpea_2009 :hbeat: I am so grateful for advice and experiences being shared by everyone in this thread! There is so much to learn from everyone! I for one am a firm believer in ‘knowledge shared is knowledge squared’

Thank you so much 🥰 The way I’m constantly thinking and playing around with combinations is crazy but I so love it. Nothing excites me like a good stack. I’m going to try to get the entire arm pieces photographed tomorrow as the Turquoise are missing for the group pic I had saved.

Heyyy @eternallove4bag , thank you for validating my feelings and such an empowering response! I appreciate your advice! It hasn’t been long since I bought the bracelet so I’ll give it some time and experiment with it. 💙

My eyes are glued here! Such great advice given so there isn't much I can add but will say:
1) Unfortunately in some cases, building a collection will have cases of trial and error. The goal is to avoid those trial and errors with pricey pieces and instead have the realization before buying anything big. Following the above will help build a curated collection but don't beat yourself up over a few mistakes. Learn from them.
2) As mentioned: research, research, research. You can never be too informed.
3) Simplest advice is follow your heart. Taking short cuts or substitutes for what you really want may help quell the desire in the short term, but it rarely lasts and often costs more in the long run.
4) DO NOT RUSH! Often we have a tendency to want to rush to get it all, but we need to be practical and realistic. If you impulse buy you're likely to regret it. Remember: for many, building a curated jewelry collection is not a race.
5) Quality over quantity any day, all day!
