Feelings about metallics this season?

This season, Vogue tells me to buy micro-duffles and candy-colored croc prints. Um, no.

But I do value my fellow TPFers’ opinions. I’ve loved metallics for a long time, and have been hunting for the perfect gunmetal bag for daytime use for a long time. The attached pics show the latest contender, a Balmain Bbox that is on its way to me and that, I acknowledge, could be gaudy but, I think, could be fabulous. Major benefits are that it is large enough to hold enough for daytime use and the SA tells me that it is fairly light. I also like that the hardware is gunmetal and not a blingy, shiny silver.

Opinions on the particular bag are welcome, but I’m also interested in your general feelings about metallics, with the caveat that I know that they can look cheap—this is based on the hypothetical high-quality, well-done metallic bag. :). Should I continue my search or move on and find another obsession?

I like the stitching and the panel construction of the Balmain, I wonder about fingerprints though? I think they could be pretty obvious as it’s such a glossy finish, and that’d make me hesitate over it.
I never considered metallic leathers for myself as I shy away from blingy things, and I tend to think of it as a delicate finish that could grow tatty quickly. But I recently bought my first ever metallic coloured bag - a BV Cabat. Definitely a departure for me, but I really liked the cracked gunmetal finish on this and it’s likely to mask signs of wear quite well I think. Can’t see myself buying a brightly coloured metallic such as red or blue, and gold is definitely, absolutely not for me either. But copper, silver, lead etc could be, I think it depends a great deal on the finish and the overall style and feel of the bag. If it looks like it’s not trying too hard to be front of stage, I’d be up for it ;)

Your cabat is stunning—do you know the color name? I have a copper Bottega Veneta mini montebello that I just recently purchased from a fellow TPFer, and it also has a beautiful burnished look.

For me, true silver and gold are formal evening-only colors. I like copper and gunmetal primarily for weekend and vacation days and evenings. I doubt that I’d carry this to work, but could see myself taking it to brunches, museums, dinners etc.—basically pretty much everything I do on a typical weekend.

Thanks for mentioning the possibility of fingerprints. I hadn’t thought of it, and will investigate once I receive it. I’m not sure if it is a patent leather, but it looks like it is in that vein, which appealed to me for durability reasons.

Thank you, the colour is called Moon. I remember a glossy metallic finished leather Mulberry brought out several years ago which was spoiled by fingerprints, everything looked really smeary. It was pretty on the shelf, but not practical at all in real life.

i have a few older metallic bags, Balenciaga Pewter from 2005, BV Peltro Cabats (2, in dif sizes) but yesterday i bought a bold, statement piece, both the shape and the finish, just the right amount of wrong :D it will make a great small evening hand-held bag/clutch, to go with a semi-formal outfit, cocktail dress, etc

Big fan of BV Gunmetal, couldn't live without my hobo in that colour. Totally love your Cabat, one of the coolest :love eyes:

All the 'oxidised' and 'dirty' metallic are very cool and a long way from bling. However, I also love bright silver.

What is also good is:
Silver is totally totally on-trend
Silver is a neutral
Silver is a pop
Silver is all year long
Silver is always cool

I don't have pics of my silver bags to hand but I have quite a few. Go with your favourite colour metallic and you can't go wrong.

I’d love to see your silver bags - bet there are some stunners in your collection !!

I adore metallic bags.. I’m not so much a primary color type of person, so they give me that something extra besides black and nudes.

Shown in the photo are:
-Bvlgari Serpenti Forever flap bag in silver brushed metallic
-Burberry Dk88 in patent silver
-Bottega Veneta knot clutch gilded oro
-Silver chainmail clutch (unknown vintage find)

I have always liked metallics!! They usually come in silver, gold and rose gold colors (all 3 colors are pretty neutral). They can be exciting in winter (cold months) when everything is dreary and gray and can be subtle in summer (warm months) when everything is bright and cheery (weather statements are in regards to Northern Hemisphere climates). Enjoy the metallic colors!!! :)

I love metallics ! Especially the milky way metallic from Balenciaga
