I have been a handbag lover for most of my adult life. And by that I mean high-end bags really are my passion. I absolutely have more affordable bags, but I’m never satisfied with those. I’m always searching for that PERFECT bag and never find it. And I bore with my bags quickly.

Recently I was on a trip in Ireland where I brought my Fendi By-the-Way, which is a fave of mine. I couldn’t have felt more ridiculous tromping through bogs and even the cities there with a $1700 bag. It was especially silly on a ferry heading to a remote lighthouse. And it was raining constantly.

I starting feeling very silly and inappropriate and wasteful. Truth be told even in my normal daily life I’m mostly going from a run or the gym or doing errands. Yes I get into the city a lot, but I live in an area where bad weather occurs frequently.

I know what is most comfortable for me and my life is a smallish non-leather crossbody that is as light as possible. Also one that can handle the elements. I can’t do heavy, and I have always preferred crossbody though I will use shoulder, but it’s not the best.

I want to stop this craziness!! I want to move past this obsession. Thanks for listening.

:flowers: We’re here for you! It’s difficult when the practical side of your brain is arguing with the wishful side of your brain. If you figure it out plz let me know. Good luck!!!!!:hugs:

I suggest your meet with a therapist. That could be very helpful. If you find someone that you "click" with, it could help you take control and avoid what seem to be compulsory behaviors. Just a thought!

that's pretty easy. Instead of paying by using your credit or debit card, collect the money from the bank (or the ATM), not all in once, but in 3 parts at least on 3 different dates and YES you are supposed to go to the bank or the ATM only for collecting the money. Nothing else. no shopping even no grocery shopping.. Put each bundle of money into your cupboard and count it every day. Do that until you reached the sum you wanted to spend on a purse. Pick the money, go to the shop and pay cash.

Believe me, you'll do it once or twice but on the third time you'll have such problems letting all that money go that you'll start to develop seperation anxiety. Works wonder.

That said, I always pay cash. Actually I am facing a few problems over here as most of the shops won't accept cash >2.000 Euros (LV around 1.000 Euros) but in this case I need to go to the bank around the corner, deposit the cash on my bankaccount and put it on a debitcard. Not funny at all and prevents me from impulse shopping.

Using a bag you bought & enjoy is not wasteful.
Or silly.
My outdoor festival/toss on ground bag cost around $1700 new. And, years later, still going strong.
Don't let them pile up in closets, believing bags are investments. Keep riding ferries & walking in rain. And you'll be fine.:hugs:

I agree....bags (and clothes and shoes) are to be used....not to sit in the closet.

I have a different view. If you have the money, the handbags make you happy AND you’re using them then there’s nothing wrong. We all deserve nice things in life and if a handbag makes your heart sing, carry it with pride and don’t think twice about it. No one (including you) should make you feel bad about what you like. The only time it may be inappropriate is if you’re squandering your rent/food etc money or going into debt because of a bag obsession.

That's a tough one. Sometimes I'll buy a bag because I love the looks even though it may not be functional for me and end up not using it as much.
Maybe go through your bags and see what does work, and try to make a list of what features you need and only buy bags that really meet your needs?

It sounds like the problem is not with spending the money on handbags but on getting the right bag that suits your lifestyle. It’s possible to get a casual bag that can withstand the elements yet still make your heart sing. I bet when you find the right bag that you love AND it works for your lifestyle you will love the bag even more because then it’s practically yet beautiful. A beautiful bag that sits in the closet being admired is just decoration. A beautiful and functional bag can serve its utilitarian purpose and more.

We don’t talk about searching for the perfect pair of shoes do we? One perfect pair of shoes that’ll wade through puddles, be great for work, and follow up for a night on the town? Course not! So give up hunting for the perfect bag, it doesn’t exist - no matter how much you spend or how long you look for it  A nylon crossbody would’ve been perfect for the ferry trip - so buy one for those sort of days, and enjoy your leather bags on those days they fit best.
