Thanks for all the comments ladies. I just picked out a full eternity band for my upcoming wedding and I was worried that the stones may chip or fall out. I guess I should make my jeweler my new best friend...LOL!

Two months ago, I got a 4.5 ct custom made, full eternity ring and 3 stones are already chipped. The vendor is charging me for the repair/replacements.

I also have a 1.8 ct eternity ring with which I haven't had any problems in the last 2 years.

^^psf2010: Unless you're digging ditches with that eternity on, I'd be screaming and yelling at your jeweler/vendor. Realizing that you said the ring is custom, i.e., non-returnable, whoever put this ring together for you should be standing behind their workmanship. 2 months!!! old and you're being held responsible for the repairs - I don't think so!!! I work in a jewelry store and we would be doing something to help the customer with that type of issue.

I have a full eternity and havn't had any trouble yet! *knock on wood*

I'm fanatical about my jewelry though and take it off as soon as I get home. I don't clean, work out, cook, etc. in any of my jewelry except for earrings.

That probably helps a lot!

As you can imagine, I'm very upset about the situation. I'm in the process of talking with the vendor right now to see if they can do anything for me. And no, I was not doing any "manual labor" while wearing the ring.

Good luck with working things out.....that is really not good!! I have a 4 ct. twt eternity set w/shared prongs and have never had any issues. No, I'm not out there digging ditches with it but definitely go about my daily life with it on my finger. Let us know how things end up.

Get yourself a loupe, 10x at least, and give your ring a good inspection after a good cleaning about once a month. That will help you identify any problems to bring to the jeweler as they arise.

The stones may become loose over time, and in some cases will fall out if the looseness isn't attended to quickly. Or if the stone wasn't set well in the first place, sometimes that happens.

Diamonds chip. That's the nature of them. They are NOT invincible. They don't scratch easily but they can break. They are not tough. It has nothing to do with the workmanship, and unless they came from him chipped already, it isn't the vendor's fault. Custom or not, nonreturnable or not. The only issue that could be had is if the stones were lower clarity with issues near the girdle when you paid for higher clarity stones. Otherwise there's not much a vendor can do to prevent that. Some styles are also more prone to damage as more of the stone might be exposed.

I have never heard of a vendor replacing damaged diamonds free of charge when the customer did the damage. That's the nature of the beast with eternity bands, too many exposed edges and with the diamonds in your hand, using your hand can cause them to be in a precarious position.

i have a 3.5 ct bezel eternity it is indestructible

i prefer the look of shared prong, but i'm really hard on my rings...i haven't had a problem, and never worry about it. it is as comfortable as a plain band.

I have a 4ct eternity shared-prong band and have never had a problem with chipping or scratches. I wear it quite often and when I am wearing it, I don't take it off. Like Swanky said, I don't wear it to lift weights at the gym or anything but that's really the only time I take off my jewelry. I figure the more I take rings off and set them somewhere, the more likely I will lose them.

Anyway, I have a half-eternity as well and I can honestly tell you there is no comparison between the two. The eternity is endless diamond sparkle around your finger ... I find myself mesmerized by it whenever I gesture with my hands.

Ame, are you certain about diamond wear and tear?

I've been told that in order to scratch a diamond yourself, you'd either have to have had the diamond come into contact/rubbing with other diamonds

or

engage in a fist-fight with another woman wearing diamonds! ;)

In any event, I know that if you knock a diamond ring against an extremely hard surface, you might chip or nick the diamond, but generally speaking, diamonds are one of the strongest elements in the world. They can take a lot of abuse!

Now....MY diamond arrived with surface scratches/blemishes that my jeweller referred to as "naturals" or trigons. These are fairly common and are usually found in a stone where the cutter wanted to retain the largest carat-weight possible. I don't care for them & it's the reason I'm getting my current stone replaced, but he told me that these "naturals" are what distinguish the real thing from a fake.

Anyways......

Scratching and nicking/chipping are different. Diamonds are hard and resistant to scratching bec they require diamonds to scratch them which can happen with improper storage, but not as tough so they do nick and chip when hitting other hard surfaces or hitting them at the right angle. I have had MANY diamonds in my eternity and half eternity bands crack and chip. It didn't take much, just the right whack on the right angle. They "cleave" and if you hit the right angle of cleavage it's toast. Besides myself having issues with chipping stones, most recently the head of my solitaire whacked against my wedding band stones girdles in two spaces and just ripped off the edges of the stones. So those were just replaced. But besides me, my mom has had 2 diamonds replaced (e-ring main stones) because she wore hers while cooking. First one whacked off a stainless table, and the 2nd when she whacked it on a stainless saucepan she was trying to catch before it dropped. My aunt's gone through so many (she's a caterer) that she hasn't bothered to replace her rings anymore.

My now-stolen band was damaged while we were in vegas by a crazy overzealous salesperson who wanted to show me how her 240 dollar cleanser was so awesome and smacked her band against mine a bunch while cleaning my hand, cracking two of my diamonds. Had I not fought her I would've been fine... She not only didn't get the sale, but the store reimbursed me the repairs and diamond replacement.

I hit my hand off a Target shopping cart a few years back when I still had my full eternity from WF and took half the stone right off and the edge of another one. I didn't even hit it hard. And those are plastic!
