Are espadrilles worth it, regardless of the brand (e.g. Chanel, YSL, Dior, Gucci etc.)?

I have been considering in purchasing a pair of espadrilles from YSL. However, given its price tag I am not sure if I should splurge as I live in a city that rains a lot.

Maybe they are not practical in my situation?

I am the kind of person that I don’t mind spending a bit more on shoes, given that I actually wear them! For example, I have 3 pairs of Roger Vivier flats that I wear constantly. The cost per wear is probably less than $1 a day .

They're probably not that practical for your situation given the rainfall but espadrilles are always in style so if you buy a good pair you might expect to have them for many years but not wear them often because of the rain - they won't last if they get wet a lot.

Perhaps you could try buying a good quality mid range designer espadrille like Castaner first to see if you like wearing them before investing in YSL, Chanel etc.

I love espadrilles and I wear YSL, Celine, Chanel, Loewe but I also have more knockabout pairs from Castaner and other brands that I don't mind replacing more often.

Awesome! I am glad I posted and asked! You just helped me saved hundreds of dollars ! Thank you!! The espadrilles won’t be on my list then.

I am quite practical when it comes to spending. If I have to baby something, then I’d rather not buy it. Or, I can only wear 2-3 months out of the year (like the espadrilles), then I am hesitant.

Luxury brand espadrilles, no, I don't think so. For espadrilles, I wouldn't pay any more than Castañer prices.
But, regardless of brand, they don't do well in the rain.

Castañer actually makes espadrilles for Hermes. Luxury quality at a much better price point, and they have so many styles. Maybe you could justify a pair of those and keep them for quite a while given that you would only wear them when it's not raining (or maybe on vacation)?

Thanks for letting me know. I never own a pair of espadrilles, so I have been considering. Well, I got this gift card (about $170) that I either spend it or it expires. But, hey, that's how they get you... they want you to spend it, so they can make more money.

Espadrilles are no good when it rains.

I come from a Spanish espadrille-making village. When I was little my grandma use to make them for me. I still buy them there, by the load, every Spring for around $10 a piece. Espadrilles are not really meant to last, although they used to be refurbished, tops replaced. I can‘t leave without them, they are my Summer shoes, the shoes I use for the beach (instead of flip flops), garden and hiking.
I don’t really get designer espadrilles. For a smart pair, get one from Castañer. They make many of the designer ones anyway.

Love espadrilles, light and airy for warm weather. I have designer ones from valentino and contemporary ones from see by chloe and vince. Highly recommend. I dont wear them everyday so they can be kept for many seasons.

I found interesting seeing espadrilles at designer prices when they were originally worn by Spanish and French peasants/working class
There is a series if Robert Capa’s photographs taken during the Spanish Civil war and you can see soldiers fighting for the Republica*soldiers wearing espadrilles

*Won’t let me use the appropriate term which is historically accurate but censored for some reason...
