my thoughts, 1) an eternity band , you will still have the sparkle and small diamonds but they will have presence. 2) what about picking out the setting for your future diamond but have a zirconia or crystal or some other substitute stone put in it till you can afford the real stone. Then you already have the setting you love and if it matters to you who would know the difference?!

Maybe a gemstone ring in your favorite color, or a color that is very neutral that goes with a lot of things? This way, if you do choose to opt for a more traditional diamond ring in the future when finances allow it, you can still wear the other ring and it can be a special piece of jewelry. Of course, the most important about an engagement ring is what it represents (his love for you and desire to be with you forever!), so I'm not trying to imply an "upgrade" is necessary at all!

I like this ring a lot (eyed it, not an owner), and from the reviews, a number of owners use this ring as an engagement ring!

Perhaps a diamond band from Signed Pieces/FacetsCollection? A smaller ct. weight would be nice, and could be used later as a wedding ring. Here are some options, though go through the site because they sell other shape stones (princess and asscher for example) as well as colored stone options and such.

or half eternity:

I second the recommendation over to facets and an eternity band is the way to go. You can always stack them and get an ering down the line when your not in so much debt.

Thanks so much for all of the excellent suggestions. We ended up going with a small ringb from Tiffany's that I thought was poetic and simple. I do think, though, that an eternity ring would be what I want as a wedding band. Thank you!

Oooh, what ring did you end up deciding on? Can you post a link or a pic? I am glad you found something you like!
