Engagement Ring Metal Advice

Thanks for all your help... ame especially. Platinum seems like the right decision for me, especially because scratches only displace the metal on a platinum ring and it won't need to be redipped since it's naturally white. I also really like the "lasts a lifetime" durability; it seems very symbolic. And I investigated the price thing and discovered that platinum is actually a lot cheaper right now (relative to gold) than it has been in a long time... it's actually an investment! Anyway, thank you all again!

I love platinum for the exact reasons that some people don't like it...the greyness, the less shiny look, the patina that comes from age and distinguishes it from white gold which to me, is more like polished sterling, JMHO

Me too! My engagement ring is platinum (it's an antique) and I love how it looks!

Btw, when my husband gave me the ring it was a super tiny size (I think 4 or 5) and we sized it up to 9 and I assume it wasn't expensive 'cause my husband didn't say anything about it. This was late 2007.

That makes me so happy that your platinum ring is an antique! It's really important to me that mine becomes one... I would love to pass it on to my children!

I guess "lasts a lifetime" is an understatement :).

For white metal, you can consider White gold, silver or platinum.

Platinum is always considered the best because of its purity and durability.

White gold is alloyed with nickel which may cause allergic reactions to the skin.

I went with yellow gold and have never regretted it - as long as the stone is a D or E
My mom's original set is platinum and she is having a disasterous time finding someone that will resize it for a reasonable cost!
Her new set is white gold and it is stunning

So, sorry but I guess that means that basically I am no help

my engagement is also platinum, and i had to have it resized recently and it cost $85. i thought that was just insane, but i really wanted to wear it so i happily paid it.

i think platinum is better because it's a softer metal (???), but keep in mind, it's much more expensive than white gold.

also, platinum never yellows like white gold does. over time, you will notice that white gold will have a yellowish tint to it and that's from being dipped in the rhodium (sp) plating wearing off over time.

if it's in your price range, i think it's always wise to get platinum.
