embarrassed to wear jewelry due to weight gain

I think one of the reasons I've always loved jewelry is b/c my weight has fluctuated--so at times I've hated buying clothes , but could still buy & love jewelry.

No matter my weight, I've always preferred 20" chains to 16 or 18.

*Don't* let yourself fall into the 'big women should wear big jewelry' mindset. Where what you adore. If you hesitate to get rings re-sized b/c you want to lose the weight over time--heck, I'd buy new rings! :)

I'd like to chime in, because I'm a plus sized woman who used to have the same problem. I hated wearing necklaces, bracelets, watches and rings (and shopping for clothes) because I was really overweight and most of the jewelry I wear is very tight, since most of my jewelry where handed down to me from my Mom, and before she died we often share jewelry. It's also the reason why I love earrings so much, because even if my weight fluctuates, I can still wear my earrings.

That being said, I learned (after years of being ashamed of myself) that I have to love what I have and what was given to me, I can choose to be happy or be miserable.

I now wear jewelry almost 24x7 and I love shopping clothes. :D

That is why I love shoes and bags and jewellery because it really doesn't matter what your size is and no matter if we put weight on nothing changes.

Live is too short to be ashamed of anything, we only have a short life so celebrate it!

I agree about the extenders.

I love bigger jewelry. It looks more proportionate on me and I am in a normal weight range. My gold rings that I bought years ago look too small and cannot be stacked, so I picked up some generic silver stacking rings and gold over silver rings, at a much lower price point than solid gold. If they don't last forever, so be it, I'll enjoy them while they last. I can always add a manicure if I want more bling on my fingers.

I also love statement jewelry as an accessory. The Tiffany statement pieces I love run $12,000 - 35,000, so I carefully select sterling silver or gold-plated items at a much lower price point and they are beautiful. I especially love long station necklaces - very elongating. My love for statement pieces came from reading the blog extrapetite.com, so even very small women like to wear big jewelry.

I love watches with big faces too. So fun! And big chandelier earrings.

This might be an opportunity for you to explore new styles of jewelry and see if you like them. ;) Go to the jewelry stores and jewelry counters in department stores and try things on, then look in a full length mirror. You may be surprised at how awesome you look with pieces you may have never dreamed of trying.

I wouldn't be so cavalier as to say "just buy new rings..." etc. I'm surprised you weren't directed off site to specific jewelers. But speaking as someone who has had weight fluctuations all my life, I totally agree with hotshot and saligator... Wear what you like, what makes you happy and feel good - whether its big & bold or small & dainty.

What a great thread. Thank you, Threshhold, for chiming in!

There were several others who chimed in, some of whom I named, with sentiments which inspired my post. They also deserve your... recognition.

I used to buy handbags because they always fit. I never needed to worry about my weight fluctuations. But since I accepted my extra fullness, I decided to dress my best and now I am much happier. Really, other people are most likely a lot more concerned about their own perceptions of themselves than they are about me. And I decided to wear at least one piece of Elsa Peretti jewelry every day. Cause I'm an Elsa groupie!!!!!

Wear your jewelry! Life is just too short!

I automatically have an additional 2" added to necklaces, I don't like them too tight, but I ask them to put a jump ring in so that I can always wear it shorter if I want to.
