Hi. I currently have a GIA certified diamond. I am looking into upgrading my diamond, and was wondering what are peoples thoughts on EGL certified stones? I can certainly tell they cost less than the GIA stones...

I think if you find a stone that you truly love who cares about the cert.
I've heard their grading has gotten better over the years so that definitely can work to your advantage now. You may need to look for EGL USA if I remember correctly. GL!

Right I agree. But I would just be concerned say I get an E color, VS2 clarity stone in EGL - is this not the same standard for E/VS2 in GIA? Like would it not be e/vs2 by GIA standards?

I've heard EGL grades more loosely than Gia or Ags and can be off by up to 3 grades? So a egl E could be a Gia G. If you are concerned, some jewelers will let you send the diamond to GIA for a fee if you really want to be sure.

But lots of people have EGL stones and they are gorgeous! EGL could be completely correct and isn't always off either. It's more about your own preferences and what you can see or tell. If you love it then get it! Happy diamond hunting!

I totally agree with both of these ladies! I know many people put a lot of emphasis on the certification...but if it saves you money to get an EGL, and you think the stone is "the one"...go for it! As long as you are happy with the stone, that's all that matters.

I have had several EGL stones. If you can check to be sure it's EGL USA you'll most likely get what you're "expecting" in terms of color clarity combo. They are fairly "lax" on Color, but actually my experience is that they're far stricter on clarity than even GIA. Mine is an EGLUSA VS1 and every appraiser I have encountered has said VVS1 at least.

The most reliable ones are AGS and GIA.

If you want to resell the EGL later, most jewelry stores will refuse to buy or they would take 30 to 40% off at the least. While GIA is roughly around 10% or equal to the price you paid if there was price increased.

Where are you getting this information? You are not sharing accurate info.

Reselling to a jeweler later will NEVER get you near RAP regardless of Lab. If you are trading in with the jeweler you initially bought it from you might get close to what you paid simply because they want your repeat business. But rarely if ever would ANYONE get remotely close to what they paid for their stone back when reselling it.

GIA is the most "accurate" of all labs, though is a little lax on clarity. AGS is accurate for CUT QUALITY, not necessarily for color/clarity. EGLUSA is pretty accurate for CLARITY but not so much color. EGLISRAEL is all over the map and usually way way wrong all over.

I have never had one EGL and not even in the future period
However, my sister in-law has and tried to trade in. That was they told them. They were even told her upfront before she purchased that stone from them. She decided to get because it was cheaper than GIA's. Not too long ago, she wants to upgrade to GIA stone, and that same jewelry store she bought from wasn't want to take it back. So, go figure :-)

One more thing, I know for sure that vs1 is never can equal or compare with vvs1 period

what do you think when people paid for vvs1 of GIA's ???

All my stone are D and H color with vvs1 from GIA.

If there is no difference between vs1 and vvs1 of GIA, why would it has so much different in US$?

Not sure about future, but for the time being, EGL is can not compare with GIA.

GIA is more reputable than EGL in all fairness. Most people don't HAVE TO have only GIA or AGS stones however, it's pretty extreme.
I have an EGL-USA stone and completely confident in it's opinion of my stone. EGL has improved a lot over the past 5-6 years and it's my opinion they aren't 2-3 levels off GIA on grading color, etc. . .

I also don't choose my jewelry to sell later and no one but me, DH and my jeweler are going to even know what my stone's cert is :shrugs:

Agreed with you about personal "extreme".

I have 2 older sisters, they were and do only buy Flawless stones in D of F color of GIA (they don't even like vvs1 :-) ).

Am satisfied with G- H color in vvs1 of GIA but not below that.
