I think you made the right decision about the Alto tote. I'm an Alto collector,
but I only use my Alto bags selectively. The concept is that they are fine leather
and will age over time like fine wine. I liken it to an old money thing.... you own
only 1 or 2 very good pieces and they last you decades.
I think colors like black, navy, and dark
brown show fewer wear marks. I'm terrified to use the lighter colors, although
I know other Alto collectors who use their lighter color Alto bags all the time.

The other thing is that Alto leather is very structured. So I think it would take
a long time for the leather to soften. It's fine for hand carry or arm carry...
but tucking it on your shoulder and under your arm ?????

Also, the organization inside an Alto is meager and nothing like the
standard Dooney pocket set up on the regular and Florentine lines.
Generally, in an Alto bag there is one tiny flip phone size pocket and
maybe one other slip or zip pocket. No key leash. Some styles have
more organization based on their design, but not pockets that are part
of the lining. Not all Alto bags are fully lined.

Alto is an acquired taste.... beautiful and high quality... but maybe not
designed to be functional for today's busy women. I think Dooney has
spoiled us with the organization on the regular Dooney lines. Many high
end handbag brands have very limited organization inside.
Of course, compared to high end luxury handbag brands, the Dooney Alto
is a fantastic handbag and a great buy.
The few alto they had I don’t think I saw them on site. The pictures online do not do those alto bags justice. They were absolutely STUNNING! very nice size totes. I was glad to see them in store and handle them in awe.
