Im wondering if LV does restorations on early historical LV trunks or if they're only able to use current canvas to fix trunks. Given that LV used to use striped cavas and fabric materials in the 1800's what would LV do? Not be able to restore it, turn away a customer? Any insight?

This is an interesting question. Since those are literally museum-level pieces, they can't and shouldn't be repaired by their Malle artisans properly, they are not enough for the job. Replacing the old canvas with the new PVC cr*p would compromise the whole concept of a historic trunk. These would need a restorer, who specialized in leathergoods. But those are again museum folks rather then Vuitton folks. My guess is that even Vuitton hires these specialists for the projects, when they buy these trunks regularly back from the market. And I have a feeling that they would recommend the same to a customer. But if anyone tried, please let us know.

@BULL I have the similar thought so since I just came back from LV earlier I wasn't going to go back to ask them one question, so I did the next best thing and called customer service! She sold me they have old stock of parts and they do "restore" trunks with old fabric so I don't know how much of that I should take with a grain of salt. The problem with outside vendors is who's qualified and at what price. And do they even have the materials? LV I can't imagine has parts from 150 years ago, but I was told otherwise and even more shockingly with a normal turnaround time of 14-16 weeks. I find it hard to believe myself, but I might stop by and inquire with my close SA friend.

That is just the regular repair answer. They are so lazy sometimes.
I guess a master restorer doesn't change things on it, just cleans and repaints if necessary. If corners or nails are missing, or big chunks of canvas, replacing them with new ones would be weird.

I agree it would be weird, and from what I've seen you're right they just touch up. I'm going to inquire at my store tomorrow, I'd like to see this trunk be back in it's former glory. 150 year old fabric.. I wonder what LV can do. I'll keep you updated!

I thought that too! I’ve called a lady that does repair and spa for handbags and she told me it’s very common that LV does not repair their leather bags! Yikes :annoyed:

I've had leather Keepall's repaired so I'm not sure what you're looking to have done. If you want the front piece of leather replaced it can be done, not sure the cost but it can be done.

This doesn’t sit right with me…LV expect us to spend $$$$ for “top quality luxury leather bags” but they cant do a repair or spa!? They will fail in this game they choose to go unlike Hermes.
