Does it have to be Tiffany's?

no way! I prefer it NOT to come frmo Tiffany's so I can get a slightly bigger and better stone for less :D I refuse to pay extra for branded jewelry :shrugs:

I agree with the other ladies!! If you love a item it doesn't matter where it's from!!
I'm a big Tiffany fan and a lot of my jewelry is from there but that does not mean I won't buy pieces from another jeweller or even a market stall!! I love pretty jewels too much to limit myself to one jeweller...esp one as expensive as Tiffany!

Yikes - it's upsetting that this question even has to be asked!! When you buy Tiffany jewelry, you're buying mass produced jewelry that's sold by the drawerful in their stores throughout the world. There is nothing unique about it. While it's usually high quality, the same quality can be had from your local jewelers, but the style will probably be more unique and the prices will probably be half or less that of Tiffany for the same or better quality.

It continues to amaze me what Tiffany's marketing department has been able to accomplish.

Cannot agree with you more!!!! Tiffany stores are everywhere. There is nothing special about their pieces aside from the fact they are knocked off everywhere. Unless you want to be able to tell everyone that "it"s TIFFANY" and who does that - you can do much better price wise and in unique pieces. just my HO.

I don't like Tiffany's, but I would also avoid mall jewelry stores like Jared's and Zales and the like for the same reasons. They all sell overpriced, mass produced jewelry. You will not get a good deal in any of these stores. With stores like Jared and Zales, you're also getting low quality stuff which is obvious if you just look closely at it. Most of the diamonds are tiny gray/yellow chips surrounded by a ton of silver to make them look bigger, a lot of the gold is either 10K or it's gold plated over sterling, they may also set stones in cheap metals like stainless steel. Tiffany's is just way too expensive for stuff you can find in any jewelry store. I think the best places to buy real jewelry is either trustworthy independent stores where you can haggle for a better deal or places like Costco for engagement rings since you can actually order the specific stone you want and you know you're getting the real deal and for a really good price.

Thanks everyone! I appreciate your responses! After looking at my question, I guess I should have worded it a little different..(my fault- sorry about that)...

.. I meant- can I get quality elsewhere? Like for instance, I know that if I go to Tiffany's and get a silver pendant necklace for $130, that is it worth that and will last. I have gotten things from mall jewelers and paid close to the same price and they are breaking or are cheap looking after a year. Is there anywhere else I can get nice quality jewelry besides Tiffany's?

If you are willing to order online, there is Bluenile or you can call Ross-Simons and they will send you a catalog and they are online but the catalog is much nicer. Their jewelry is quality pieces and at a much better price. I am sure there must be independent jewelers in your area that are not a Zales, Kay type. You can recognize them because they would carry Rolex, Cartier, etc.

I agree that you don't want Tiffany's if you want the most for your money. I got my wedding band at the diamond district in NYC. I went to Tiffany's and they wanted five times the price of what we paid for it! I was able to get better stones (E) vs Tiffany's (G) on my eternity band and bigger stones. Tiffany's is fun to look at but waaaaay over priced in terms of diamonds.

I'm obsessed with the fine jewelry sold at Barney's! I love the designers they carry there and while I own several Tiffany pieces, I don't really wear them since it seems like every girl in a tee shirt and jeans has on a piece of Tiffany.

I want a Tiffany's diamond by the yard necklace for my next anniversary. I have also seen this style of necklace at other jewelry stores so I plan to buy the one that is less expensive. There is no value in buying the Tiffany's necklace just because it is T unless I want to add to my T collection.
