Hello! Ive heard about bags that was turned brandnew when subjected to a spa. They change the hardware, they altered the leather and they dye it as well. I have a bag with some damage in front of the flap, on the leather part and my sister offered to shoulder the expenses to have it spa’d so it would be new again. However, I was hesitant because I feel like it would affect its value. My sister told me that if anything, it should increase its value but I feel like it is going to depreciate instead. What is your opinion? Does having your chanel bag spa’d to a new condition make it worth even morenor less? Or is it better to leave it alone?

I don’t have first hand experience, but I have read (on tPF) that dying the leather does change the feel and will decrease the resale value.

A full dye job will affect the resale value but touching up shouldn’t - other repairs will increase the value / take a look at the leather surgeons website / they are wonderful and can work miracles / good luck and happy New Year!

If I personally found a bag that I would be wearing and using a lot, I would fix it up and not care about resale value.

If I found a bag that needed some TLC but plan on selling later, I would be picky with what type of spa treatment it will be receiving (like loose thread or corner repair, yes. Fix broken hardware, yes. Re-dye job on entire bag, no.)

Agree!

Ok because I was thinking of restoring one of my bags but It made me think if it affects its value. Should it be called chanel still if some parts were changed or replaced?

Unless the bag is absolutely trashed ready for landfill and a spa trip would literally resurrect it from the dead then I would never ever use a bag spa. The finishing can be very questionable and should it need any additional servicing in the future Chanel wouldn’t touch it.

So for risen From the dead bags it could increase the value, normal wear and tear it would decrease value in my opinion.

A talented third party professional who is experienced with Hermes leather will advise whether a dye job should be undertaken. I’ve had box, barenia, and VN dyed with impeccable results (years ago these bags were accepted by H Spa without question (however I have heard that this is no longer the case, and I would likely not risk it today ) if I intended to use H spa.

I would not fully redye lambskin as I do believe this could change the hand or feel

For some reason, I cannot edit the post above. My third party professional has advised me not to do certain jobs, and she will certainly outline risks and pros and cons.

I would not purchase a chanel bag that needed a redye, as I don’t believe that chanel redye is successful.

Unless a Birkin is a fun art project (and I’ve bought with the intention of making it a fun project) , I do not believe it should be repainted. Any art project I undertake is done by a third party professional; I would not attempt a DIY

First photo was of a 32 fauve barenia HAC, reconditioned ; subsequently accepted for H SPA a decade ago
And of a 28 black box kelly, reconditioned; subsequently accepted for handle and Sangler replacement by H Spa
(My experience with H Spa has been different than many others on TPF) and I do not recommend third party work if you wish to submit for spa today

I had my Chanel lady braid flap bag (in distressed lambskin I think?) re-painted. I was NOT happy. The bag was in great condition just needed to be cleaned out, they told me they can redye and it will look good... Oh boy its so hard and stiff!!!!!!!!! No longer have that soft leather feel... Ugh I was soooo disappointed! HOWEVER, I did have my first WOC in black caviar repainted (again it did not even need to be repainted, I just got kind of sucked in but that's a different story LOL) and I was very pleased with the results, no complains on this one. Looks brand new and the leather looks great.

I have a light-colored lambskin mini rectangular flap from 2020 that needs some corner touch-ups. However, Chanel customer care at the store said they will need to refinish the entire bag and she recommended I wait 2-3 years to get it done because the refurbishment can only be done once in a lifetime and will alter the texture of the leather slightly. I know I can get the touchup done by a local leather shop or Leather Surgeons. But I heard if I do that Chanel will not service my bag in the future. Is that true? I do like the feel of my bag but the scuffings really bother me. Any recommendations?

Someone set me straight if I am wrong, but Leather Surgeons repairs most if not all Chanel spa services in the US. That said I have been away from Chanel for some time, so things may have changed. My 2 cents is if a bag needs to be redyed, and I have had only 2 redyed, it was worth every penny. I would rather save the bag than worry about its hand feeling slightly different. in your case of just corner touch up, I would use LS. I would not redye a bag just for corner wear. Wonder why Chanel would recommend a dye job?? Seems odd. I know Hermes does corner touch ups.
