Do you wear your luxury bags everyday?

To me the point of luxury is to improve your everyday life in terms of aesthetic beauty, the joy of using a fit for purpose well made item, the pleasure of craftsmanship and tactile materials... Why would you invest in that and then deny yourself the pleasure. Plus financially wise, I think in terms of cost per wear. So I am more likely to use a luxury bag every day and a cheap one for a special event. When I was young and had more budget limitations but still a passion for fashion, I would invest in special designer items that I would wear to death and then make do with H&M or Zara for weddings and like.

That said, I think the combination of the increase in the price of luxury and the decrease in quality, added to a certain type of social pressure, makes a lot of people anxious. I feel before, luxury was about pleasure and/or status, but it was taken far less seriously. When I read in here so many tales of anxiety and distress over bags’ defects, price, tear and wear... I really wonder if it is worth it...

I think sometimes people buy bags that don't fit their personal style, lifestyle, or values, which I myself have been guilty of in the past, and the mismatch feels anything but luxurious.

The weather, season and occasion determine what I’m wearing, not the price tag.

well put ! The weather, season and occasion determine what I’m wearing, not the price tag!
at the moment I carry a straw basket bag, (well under $1000!) London is just sizzling and is seems to be the most appropriate bag to carry. sometimes I carry my little KP in the evening, and if its pouring down i may use a nylon longchamp...

Do you use your luxury ($1000+) bags everyday?
No.
Or do you save your pretties for the parties and use cheaper or contemporary designers everyday?
No.
Or do you have luxury bags that you use everyday and different luxury bags that you use for dinners out and special occasions?
Yes.
Or do you think luxury bags a waste of money when you can buy double or triple the amount of cheaper bags and use them all the time?
No.
Thoughts?
I own different bags for different tasks.
Chanel & hermes, etc. not always best choice.

Cycling=zippered exterior pockets, worn across back. Plus survive crashes/road filth/grease stains.
Baseball games=big enough to hold noise-makers & rally flags. Plus survive sticky food spills.

Clutches are not for carrying paperwork.
Totes are not for glittering at banquets.
You get the idea.

Money buys stuff, not personal taste & style.
Taste & style know how to be appropriate--also when to rebel.
Regarding handbags, plus other aspects of life too.

Do I consider handbag's cost? Of course.
Nothing to prove to others, especially by destroying a multi-thousand cost bag during black water rafting or rough travel schedules.

Do I fret over cost, when using bag? Absolutely not.
Set it on ground & carry cheap pens inside plastic baggie, whatever bag choice worn.
If damaged beyond tolerance, buy another.

It's hard for me to quantify luxury with a dollar amount, but by that definition ($1000+), no, I do not use them, or any bag, every day. I like to cycle my bags according to occasion and mood, so on any given day you might see me carrying a $100 bag or a $2000+ bag.

Here is a selection of my business bags:
View attachment 4125987The two Lotuffs in the back cost $1775 apiece. The two Coaches in the middle are about $595 apiece. The front LV is no longer sold but goes for about +/-$1000 used on average.

I tend to use the Lotuffs for dressier occasions, the chocolate in fall/winter and the cognac in spring/summer. I use the Coach bags more often because they're more business casual and fit my daily style better. The LV is super casual to me and something I might reach for to transport books and electronics on a weekend getaway. Some people might consider the LV the only "luxury" bag in this collection.

The luxury component to me is the ability to choose which bag I want to carry. If my budget could only allow for one bag I would have to go with the dressiest one (chocolate Lotuff), but that wouldn't be luxurious to me since it would be bought out of utility and necessity rather than desire. On the other hand, a single Hermès Sac a Depeches costs more than this sample of my collection, but having 5 of those instead wouldn't be very luxurious to me since I prefer briefcases with crossbody options.

I don't think "luxury" bags are a waste if they're used and loved, but experience has also taught me that price and label are not necessarily indicative of quality. At the same time, I think sometimes people buy bags that don't fit their personal style, lifestyle, or values, which I myself have been guilty of in the past, and the mismatch feels anything but luxurious.
I like how you pinpointed "mood" as an indicator of when you may choose to carry a bag. I realize that this is a major reason why I have decided to keep bags that may not be a lifestyle fit today but can certainly come in handy in the future because my lifestyle evolves over time. My Chanel boy seems impractical now due to size but I know one day, it will be exactly what I need when I need it and I will be elated carrying it, like with my jumbo classic flap, which I will take out again this week.

After some recent shifting in my collection I now only own premier luxury bags. So by default and choice, I use them every day.

My handbags are my hobby and a way to treat myself. They make me deliriously happy.:yahoo: So, they go on my daily life’s journey with me. I can’t imagine buying a pretty bag and being afraid to use it. I want it with me.

My handbag wear decisions are pretty easy: First, I have bags for just about every use. For example, have cutesy lambskin flaps for date night, sturdy calfskin totes for work and a carefree nappa leather hobo for daily errands. That means I can I pick the (luxury) bag appropriate for the look, use and environment.

Second, I tend to wear my more expensive bags the most. Not simply because they are the most expensive but because in order for me to pay $3-5k on one bag (That is my maximum. I’m flinching and grumbling but, I’ll pay it for the perfect bags.), I REALLY have to love it. That means I’ll reach for it more often because it’s sitting there looking adorable on the shelf. It has to come out to play! :happydance: I do admit, I will baby more expensive bags in delicate leathers. But, I think that’s just common sense to care for one’s things. They still defintiely get worn.

Lastly, I can get bored with a bag over time. So, I try to pick bags from which I think I’ll get very good use. I want lots of happy memories associated with the bag so that I am more likely to keep it longer. And, if I do sell, I want it to be after it’s really been mine and serviced my needs so I don’t mind letting it go at whatever price market will bear. I will have already gotten my happy out of it.

Ok thanks so much for the replies!
Personally I swap my bags most days depending on what I am doing and I use luxury and contemporary every day.
However your replies have made me realise that I do baby some of my high end bags and I should use them more. I always take cheaper bags when I have the kids (little boys!!).
I have a mix of all sorts of bags from super expensive to super cheap.
I decided to take a cute little gold purse to a charity polo match the other weekend because it matched my dress more than my other bags. Amongst all of the Hermes and Chanels in the VIP area I got 3 different women come up to me and complement me on it! I have to admit that I did not tell them it only cost $35 from a local boutique :P.

Currently, a third of my bags are designer. I rotate my bags according to what I’m wearing. The only places I won’t wear designer bags are pool, beach, river, water park, lake. Basically, anywhere there is sunscreen, chlorine or sand+water, and salt is a no go for any of my bags except for my Haiku. However, if it’s just raining, I’ll choose my LV Verona over any of my other bags.

Other than that, I’m only a bit careful about when I carry my Mono Speedy and Balenciaga Day. Lamb skin and vachetta scare me a little.

Just about every day. I just donated a bunch of non designer bags to charity and am selling almost all of the rest I have left - with designer I know I'm always on point and I don't need to worry about the bag being able to handle all the shenanigans I get up to on the daily.
I do carry non designer/contemporary when I travel. Also, my workout bag is Nike so not really working out in style, one might say :P

Everyday of course! This one time, the Dior lady yelled at me for using my bag so often xD She went: Ma'am, this bag is like a jewel, you can't wear it everyday, you have to cherish it, take care of it... Then I went: uhhh, it's a bag, of course I can wear it everyday, I just need to know how to clean it when it gets dirty! (she had nothing to say to that xD)
