Do you think white gold looks like silver?

Yes, I think all the silver/white toned metals look about the same, so I prefer cheaper silver or stainless steel for white metal. If the piece is large or heavy, it's assumed it's sterling silver (or stainless steel, probably less common but out there and cheaper than silver and doesn't tarnish), if it's more delicate it could be silver or white gold. Sterling tarnishes but if you polish it looks new again.
 
It might look a bit similar but it seems to wear allot better and like someone said doesn't tarnish as bad. I know a friend who got a platinum ring and apparently its the best because its really malleable so you can smoothen out scratches to the point where it looks almost new

The downside with platinum though is that it is more brittle so it can literally chip. :(
