People were wearing those name necklaces a decade before SaTC. Then they kind of fell out of fashion, in that you didn't see them all over the place.
Then Carrie (Pat Fields?) started the whole thing up again. I think SaTC is already out of many people's minds and you can wear yours... after all people were wearing them BEFORE Carrie and will continue to wear them long after Carrie.

Its one of those cultural things that a public persona will take on and it becomes like a fad for the public but never goes out of style. Remember the Gwen Stefani rasta faze? People of that set still wear those colors because it who they are. So it just depends on whos looking at it. I think anyone can where it especially if your style is not too stuffy, KWIM. Even my little niece has a name plate. Enjoy
