Do you still carry your Chanel classic flap out and about?

I brought mine a good few years ago when it was half as much as it was. It was really expensive for me back then,but I used to carry it frequently out and about, shopping, running errands, seeing friends, lunch or dinner. I don’t have a glamorous lifestyle so for me I like to use my handbags for everyday things rather than to save for special occasions. It was also fairly common to see a Chanel flap pretty frequently, as I live in a big city.

I still see Chanel flaps around but much less frequently than pre-Covid. These days I see Chanel around when I’m shopping in big department stores like Selfridges and Harrods, but not so much out and about like it was before. It doesn’t make sense for me to only use it when shopping as I don’t really go shopping anymore. I miss carrying my handbag around, but I also don’t feel comfortable knowing the cost of it is now and that I am a walking target.

I ask because I have one more classic flap I want, but I am now seriously debating whether I should get it. I don’t want a handbag to sit in my closet or for investment reasons, I want to use my handbag. Even with my current flap, I love it, but I don’t love it in the same way as I used to as I don’t feel as comfortable carrying it. I would go preloved route, but the bag I want is rare as it is and not much savings on the preloved market.

For those that have yours do you still carry it around?
For those that have one or few more on their wishlist to buy, how do you justify?

I didn’t vote because I don’t currently own a flap, though I checked one out this week and thinking about it. I justify it by saying if I will ever buy it, may as well buy it now because the price will only go up.
I would feel comfortable wearing it but I also live in an area where they are commonly seen.

So I definitely still wear my CFs. I haven't had them for very long (since 2020), and so I wear them because I'm still kind of in that honeymoon phase of wanting to wear them all the time. That is my internal truth. However. I am also aware that there is a recession on, and MANY MANY people are suffering. Therefore, I am often a bit self-conscious of my CFs when I'm out and about, especially if I happen to be using them while running mundane errands (like picking up prescriptions or something) considering how stupidly expensive they are these days. I often fear judgement from those around me, and I also fear being targeted if I'm out and about alone too.

The most recent classic flap is from December 2021 and I haven't worn it or any other classic flap since around this time last year. I am just not that into them anymore for some reason. I knew that when I got the last one, but it was yellow and I couldn't help myself.

I think I am little self-conscious carrying them compared to the Boy or the 19, for one. It just feels more conspicuous and I don't want to come off as a person who spends that kind of money on a bag even though that's exactly what I am clearly!

And the CF just feels cumbersome to me and my life is too busy and on the go to be bogged down by a bag that isn't comfortable crossbody (medium) or weighs a ton (jumbo). Part of me thinks that if I put in the effort, I would eventually wear them more on weekends and evenings, but I find myself reaching for different, more fun and inspiring of creativity bags on those occasions.

I carry it only when I go out with my husband. I feel safer that way. And I don't carry it every single time I go out with my husband. If I happen to be going out with him that day and I feel like wearing my CF, then I will wear it.

I do live in an area where I see classic flaps relatively often (like not just at the mall, but at grocery stores and Costco) but there has been an incident of a classic flap being stolen at my local mall at gunpoint in 2021 so....I like to stay on the safe side. :P

I marked yes because I carry my 19 for daily use. I own one CF in jumbo size and I take it on the weekends. I am careful where I use it. I know there are some locations where I should avoid using it. I am seriously considering adding another smaller CF in another color. I plan to use it for special occasions, travel, etc. Considering the cost of it now, the cost per wear maybe poor but I love Chanel CFs and their aesthetics. I thought about other brands but do not think I will be satisfied.

exactly this, I don’t want to come across as though I spend that kind of money, although i do. Most of my bags are a little understated, but with Chanel they are slightly more obvious, it was ok for me to where as it was fairly common to see them.

has this changed since the pandemic or due to recent rises? I used to see them around so often, the underground, grocery stores, gyms, but now it seems as though I only see it in luxury stores or online.

The fact that they are now on the radar for robbery and theft is pretty scary.

I meant CFs, I don’t feel the same about my Chanel tote mostly because the price is so much lower. I also think part of the reason why I want either a mini of WOC is so I can feel comfortable carrying it around, but I dont want to get to 5 years time and feel like I can no longer carry these either. However I just love the shoulder look that mini and WOC doesn’t have.

I wouldn’t put the 19 in this category just yet, mostly because of its slightly lower price point, but also agree with you I love Chanel CFs and don’t love other brands (other than Dior certain styles) as much. But at the same time I’ve been so incredibly put of by their price increases, and I don’t mean because its more expensive to buy, but the fact that I now need to think twice every time I want to carry it out (different with Hermès as they are much more understated). Handbags are supposed to be fun. Also thought it was incredibly insensitive to put the prices they did during the pandemic.

I consider my small black 19 much flashier than my small black Classic flap. That being said, they are both daily use bags for me. They are too expensive to sit in my closet, though I do rotate them with other brands and am mindful about where and when to use them. I don’t think Chanel bags work for every occasion, though I respect whatever others want to do. I feel the most discreet with my large Reissue. No CCs!

I definitely carry my reissues more often - I agree they are less conspicuous in general. But having said that, I got a preloved medium CF recently. Have wanted one for a while and came across one in a condition and at a price that I was comfortable with. I already have a jumbo as well but don’t carry it as often either (mostly due to the size). Still waiting for the right occasion to bring the medium CF out :biggrin:
