Do you purchase backups of your favorite items?

If I really like something, yes! But can't afford exact backups of designer items 
I mostly do it with shoes, clothes, etc. For bags, I did it with Givenchy Pandora but different sizes, Balenciaga (diff sizes) and Saint Laurent Loulou (diff sizes too).

For LE or hard to find makeup or skincare, yes. For designer goods, no. These items are a luxury so I treat them reasonably well, and I have a large enough collection where I can rotate and avoid wear. I am also fairly certain if I did wear a bag out, there'd be something else out there I'd want to replace it with.
I don't have backups as the OP expressed: a duplicate of the exact same item. But I do have 2 of most of my items in different colors or prints, 2 mini pochettes, 2 speedy 30s, 2 canvas key pouches, 2 empreinte key pouches, 2 kirigami sets. I didn't do this on purpose, I just buy multiples when I like something.

For make up maybe yes but definitely not for high end goods especially bags. Tho I did buy mini pochette in different prints and so did pochette accessories. In Chanel also I have multiple card holder in different colors. But this mostly slgs and not in exact print and colors.
If you can afford it, financially and space wise, I don't see a problem with having doubles. Sometimes I regretted buying only one of something that I really really liked, because when I wanted to get another one, since the one I had was starting to wear of, I couldn't buy it any more because it was discontinued. But maybe I'm just too attached to my things? I only bought thing that I really like.
I suffer from mild OCD so it does give me a peace of mind to have backups of a lot of things (Jewelry, clothing and shoes under $500), but for bigger ticket items like bags it just isn’t cost effective for me to do. Instead I’ll delegate certain things to special occasion only use or to be used when I know nothing stressful will happen to it.
When I do happen to get backups of SLGs, I try to get it in a different print or leather as not to be “wasteful”. You end up with fun things you might not have previously thought you’d enjoy so much!
