Do you prefer smooth or grained leather, and why?

Do you prefer handbags made with smooth or grained leather?

I'm curious, which do you prefer?

I used to be more partial to grained/pebbled leather because I love touching and looking at the texture of the grain. Of course, smooth leather has a visible grain too, but it's much finer. I always associated grained leather with more durability and found that the texture hides dents and scratches fairly well - perfect for a handbag that gets knocked around. For this reason, I tended to stick to grained leather bags over the years because I like my bags to look well maintained without too much effort. Smooth leather was reserved for small leather goods, shoes and clothing only (like my buttery lambskin jacket).

However, some of my more recent bags have been smooth leather. I have a Fendi Kan I, Givenchy WOC and Proenza top handle, all in smooth leather (I believe calfskin?). When I purchased them, I accepted that there would be some babying involved and inevitable scratches from fingernails, keys and whatnot. But to my surprise, smooth calfskin isn't as fragile and delicate as I expected. I found that most scratches can be buffed out gently with my finger so long as they don't "break" through the surface of the leather. Once the grain is somewhat realigned, the scratch isn't visible anymore.

What's more, in my personal experience, I discovered that I don't get color transfer on my pale grey Kan I, whereas I frequently do if I'm wearing my grained leather bags. The tiny "pebbles" that I love looking at so much are great at clinging onto dye/ink from clothing, shopping bags or furniture. But my Kan I seems to have nothing on it, as if the smooth texture means everything just slides right off.

So I used to be like 90% for grained and 10% for smooth, but my observations over the last 2 years or so are definitely pushing me closer to 60-40%, especially if I'm considering a light colored bag. My eyes still prefer the look of grained leather but my brain has started to acknowledge that smooth leather (specifically calfskin) actually has a lot going for it in terms of maintenance.

I voted grained, but I guess it depends. I am more particular about how natural the graining looks, than how smooth or grained it is. My smoothest leather bag is my MCM Klara Hobo, and that still has some light graining if I look at it up close. I would rather a smoother leather like that than a more coarsely pebbled leather with evenly stamped/ embossed grain.

I generally prefer grained leather for my handbags. My thoughts were along the same as yours that grained=more durability. However, my most recent bag purchases have been smooth leather. They look very nice and luxe and if there is any tiny scratch I can usually buff it out. I was really scared about the smooth leather getting scratches easily initially. My lambskin bag is definitely more delicate.

I voted for grained leather because that is what I prefer at the moment. I like to see the texture and I certainly appreciate how grained leather is more carefree. But it really depends on the bag and the quality of the materials. But I think my favorite types of leather are grained and (moderately) wrinkled.

I prefer smooth leather that will soften and burnish as it ages. The only leather that I do not like, though, is saffiano leather. A lot of designers have started using this over the years, and it's just too stiff and looks cheap to me.
I agree. Saffiano leather just looks like a synthetic textile, it doesn't visually resemble anything natural like grained or smooth leather, suede or nubuck. To me, it sort of defeats the purpose to use leather that doesn't even look like leather. Same goes for patent I guess.

Given the option I prefer smooth ! However, my decision would change for a subtle grain with a sheen such as goat leather...
My Antigona is goat leather with a light grain, I would say somewhere between smooth and grainy. It does have a sheen to it as you described. Gorgeous bag but I never choose it over my pink SDJ, so will be saying goodbye.

Funny how little things from our childhood shape us as adults. My first 'big girl' fancy shoes where patent leather (certainly faux leather, but as a child I didn't know that), and ever since then patent leather means elegant and sophisticated to me.

I love patent leather too. But between smooth vs grained , smooth wins .
Buttery smooth leather, sigh!

I don't mind the look of patent details here and there but I can't get over the fact that patent leather is leather that has been coated in layers of polyurethene and/or acrylic. Leather/suede/nubuck is natural and biodegradable... until you add plastic.

But I too used to associate patent leather with luxury. Maybe the shine reminds us of jewels or pearls. That said, I've seen some smooth leathers polished to such a high shine that they look almost patent (minus the plastic).

I'm with you on not being a fan of saffiano, and thinking it looks cheap....

OMG, I totally agree with you..
I thought it is only me who think it looks cheap because most of my friends love it..

For the appearance perspective I love smooth leather, especially in black. It looks so elegant!
But I am a careless person in terms of maintaining bags/wallet, so I find myself tends to buy something with pebbled or grained leather.
