Do you negotiate $ for diamond price?

I'm totally prepared to walk! I'm currently waiting on my green tourmaline stone that is being set at another jeweler. So I have that ring which is new and I'll enjoy in the meantime. The prices quoted to me on the phone were a little high so I will hear what they have to say in person on Wednesday. So is between Chritmas and Valenines Day a good time or bad time to buy?

OP, as everyone here has already said you should be able to negotiate with the jeweler. Depending on the store, most places seem to jack prices up to leave room for negotiation. I would think if you are a loyal customer they would be even more willing to discount. My husband and I were even able to negotiate for my center stone at White Flash a little bit because we paid cash for the stone and they didn't have to pay for the credit card transaction.

I would do some research on what you're buying at other stores, if you haven't done so already, to see what a fair price is. Also, to respond to what you posted here IMO this is probably the worst time to get a good deal because everyone is shopping for Christmas/Valentine presents. I would think jewelers aren't as "desperate" and therefore less willing to negotiate. I could be wrong, but this seems to make logical sense. I am in the market to get a sapphire or emerald cocktail ring and I am doing research now, but I am planning on waiting until summer to get it.

Good luck! Let us know what happens.

To those of you who asked what I am getting:

I really don't know! I'll know when I see it! I have a 1.25 round in a Hearts on Fire Halo setting. Sometimes it is a little dressy and I want something plain, smaller and simple. I thought about a princess cut that would eventually go to my daughter. I looked at Tiffanys and fell in love but then got cold feet. I think I can do better at a B & M store but not sure. We'll see......

Hokaplan, did you see my post for the white diamond sola? They have a .42 for around $5k. I don't know what your budget is, but the ring looks spectacular and they probably have smaller carat sizes. Maybe it's still a little too dressy? But I think you should check it out, since I know you were interested in the yellow diamond sola at one point LOL

I think January might be an ok time to buy, or I would wait till after valentines day. They might have an excess of stock after Valentines day that they'd like to get rid of. It also depends on the jeweler. I know here some jewelers own all their diamond stock, and they seem to be the ones that give a better deal. Other jewelers have a rotating stock of diamonds..I know they don't own them, I don't know who does, but they get stones in and I guess make money when they sell them.. Those type of jewelers seem to negotiate less.
I think a stone/ring to pass onto your daughter is a beatiful idea! I've been in that mindset lately too.

hokaplan, good idea! If I ever get a white diamond ring, I'd get it from a non-brand name store also. I know you are well aware that you can get a bigger carat for less money AND there is a WEALTH of information on the net that can aid you. I felt a little lost with fancy colored diamonds - I couldn't find enough information that made me confident in buying yellow diamonds from B&M stores since some were selling XYZ colored white diamonds as yellow diamonds and so on. But I believe if you do enough research you can get the best white diamond out there for the best price!

What are Brick and Mortar stores?

My ex ( who is mid eastern) used to try to bargain all the time. This was normal for him as this is the way he was brought up.

He was never successful negotiating prices in the west.
THen again he never bought any really big ticket ( 50 thousand or more) items himself.

the best time to negotiate with B&M stores is in the summer (july and august), this is the slowest time of year for sales in the jewellery industry which will make jewellers more willing to lower their prices. ;)

I didn't know it was their slowest months, but it makes sense now why the jeweler closest to me has HUGE sales in July and then takes off the whole month of August to go on a "diamond buying trip" overseas.
