My husband and kids are giving me a hard time because I bought a pretty diamond cross today. They say we aren't religious and I shouldn't wear it. I say it's a sign of hope and anyone can wear it. Thoughts? Thanks.

I think anyone can wear it, and yes, I agree it's a sign of good hope, being blessed, and it will help protect you. I am Catholic, so I have very specific feelings about the cross, but I believe everyone can (and should) wear it!

To me it definitely indicates being a Christian. Generally speaking, Catholics (at least around here) wear them more often than those of other denominations. To me, there are symbols of hope and then there are religious symbols. For many people, the Star of David is a symbol of hope and unity. Would you find it acceptable for a non-religious person to wear a Star of David, or would you assume they were of a certain faith?

Certainly it is up to you, and everyone has a different perspective. But to me a cross is a specific religious symbol. Unless one shares the beliefs/religion, it would strike me as unusual to wear one.

To me, you wear it to proclaim your faith. You wear it because you are a believing Christian and are proud of it, not for hope or for protection, but to show your love for God with it. To show your faith, just like someone would wear a star of David to proclaim their belief in Judaism, I would find it odd if someone was wearing a cross for 'hope" or just for fun, to me, if I see someoen wearing a cross, I believe they are Christian.

Oh, and Catholics usually wear crucifixes, not usually plain crosses, though of course, they can wear either.l

I just saw a pic of Madonna(who I consider a tad wacky) wearing a cross. What is she? She was a Catholic, then Jewish, then Scientology(sp?). I guess she just considers it a sign of faith? I consider myself Christian, though not religious. I know people have strong feelings about this(stronger than I thought). I just wanted to know if others felt as I did.

The Cross is a sign of hope, the reminder that Jesus died on the cross as a savior to mankind. I'm a Christian and I'm not religious. Being religious does not mean that you have a relationship with God.

I think that although you don't have to be, people are going to assume that you are religious when you have it on? Similarly to the Star of David, I think there are a lot of cute necklaces with that as a pendant, but it's definitely not something I'd wear just for fun.

Then again, the cross is a much common symbol. Personal choice. :p
