I think designers want to get into this sort of thing (Vera Wang Lite for Kohl, for example) in order to satisfy the desire for upscale products among those who would normally be customers on Santee Alley or on Canal Street. In other words, imo, this is the designers' way of heading off the counterfeiters by trying to appeal to their customer base - women of all income levels who want a designer look yet who also want to conserve their expenditures.
With the downturn in the economy, it is my view that this sort of thing will increase, not decrease.
If you're buying a quality handbag for the bag and not just to be someones walking advertising, then nothing can "cheapen" your handbag. Designers don't (or at least shouldn't) get into the fashion business to make pretty things for a small sub-sect of pretty people with money - its about everyone having and enjoying nice things. If that means someone can enjoy a Botkier or Gryson or whatever from Target made with less expensive materials and set at a better price point, then I say thats fantastic.
Like I said in a previous post in another thread - people who think a brand making a more affordable offshoot is a bad thing is just being a snob and should probably check themselves - most of them would fight kicking and screaming to the front of the line for a "Chanel by Target" and you know it!
Well what about Ralph Lauren? I mean I have stuff from about 3 different price points. Black label, purple label, blue label, maybe I'm even confusing colors - I don't know. I don't think too much is exclusive anymore. Unless you go vintage/handmade, I mean even Hermes is accessible.
I'm not a huge fan of the idea, but I guess it doesn't really bother me that much.... I kind of think it's like Marc Jacobs vs. Marc by Marc Jacobs.... the MJ's are made in Italy, the MbMJ's are made in Indonesia or wherever...different price points.
Instead of putting your name on the Target bags. Come up with something different. Then you do not loose your your highend bag buyers... Wait and see I guess. I do not see as many people loving the highend bags as before.I'm with PP. Target bags are intended to be entry level/low end. I may be wrong but it seems like designers definitely want to distinguish their target/entry level bags from their high end bags. I think the designs will be different and of course the materials will be different as well. I am excited to see what they are like.
I was just thinking... the difference between an Old Navy Sweater and a Banana Republic sweater is huge.... same company but very different quality. Just a thought...
