Did you pick out your own engagement ring?

Did you pick out your own engagement ring?

  • Yes, I picked out the ring myself.

  • No, the proposal was a total surprise and so was the ring.

  • I gave enough hints so DF knew exactly what to get me

I was a mix of surprise and picking it out myself...I went ring shopping with (now) DH and picked out several emerald cut stones in different sizes and a few settings I liked....then we went to Cartier where I pretty much DIED over the ballerine with EC and knew it was the one...

what surprised me was the proposal and the fact he actually got my dream cartier for me!! I never though it would happen in a million years :smile1: so I KINDA picked it our/KINDA was surprised.

For years, I would look at the Tiffany Victoria ring every time we went to Tiffany so DH knew that was my dream ring. The proposal was however a surprise and I really did not expect him to get that ring for me so even though I kinda picked my own ring, it was indeed a surprise because I didn't think it was attainable!

I picked the first one out and the next one he surprised me with(we've been married 24 years...) but he knew all to well what I wanted so in essence I guess I picked that one out too.

I chose it, both the placeholder ring and the tiffany and co ring he will give me when he has the money. i told him to give me a sterling silver ring for now, as there is no reason to spend much on a ring now, when I have my eyes on another one he cant afford at the moment.

So, yeah, I chose it. Im very picky when it comes to what I wear.

I chose it - I love him to bits, but he doesn't even wear a watch - what the hell does he know about jewellery??

He suprised me totally with the proposal - out of the blue! And then a few days later he told me what he could afford and I trotted off into town to pick something out.

It took me a month! Turns out I was clueless too and didn't even know what I wanted, let alone what would suit my fingers!

But I did find something, and rang him excitedly on the phone to come in and see what he thought. He came right in and liked it, so he paid right there and then and I walked out wearing it and we had to go straight into a bar for a stiff drink! And it was so nice, just the two of us, staring stupidly at each other with big goofy grins, looking down at this ring on my hand.

It's a nice memory.

Just got engaged two weeks ago :hbeat:

He totally surprised me with the diamond of my dreams set in a temporary solitaire setting. He said he wanted me to pickout/design the exact setting I wanted. So the next day I started researching and found the ring I want forever. We spoke to the jeweler and he's now making it custom for me. So the whole ring is a combination of his hard work picking out the diamond, and my taste in the setting. Only problem is that we had to give the diamond back to the jeweler so that the setting fits exactly, and I now have to wait two weeks to have my ring back (I miss my diamond!)

My cousin works in a company that sells diamonds. So, my husband got the diamond from him. I had chosen the metal and the setting I liked, but not the size/type of diamond (didn't want to get involved with the cost). I was very pleasantly surprised:) It's a beautiful ring that I love.

i actually helped my DF design the ring..we did the sketches together and saw the autocad drawings. I also got to help pick out the diamond,

However, he wouldnt let me see the final product and i had no idea when he would propose..so it was still a surprise in a way.

His logic was "if i am dropping 10k on a ring it better be everything you want it to be" and it just made things more personal and intimate.

Some of my friends were against the idea but DF and i have been together for 4+ yrs and talked about marriage all the time so it's not like i didnt know it was coming..

Nope. I did let him know I liked round diamonds and that I wanted a really good quality diamond vs. a really big one.(but I still wanted at least a carat)

He did great. I'm so loving all the halo rings now tho!!

My husband picked the ring all by himself and I loved it, 4 prong, about 0.30ct. I could have done a better job with the colour and clarity. Because he bought it from a jeweller friend, he is now kicking himself cause he realised he paid much more and the workmanship sucks.

Over the years, the engagement ring has been upgraded but kept the original ring. I recently re-set it into a band after 5 years with my jeweller and I love the way it look on the band. It brings back lots of good memories when we were not as financially strong as today.

The proposal was a complete surprise but SO went nuts trying to pick something out himself because apparently I've always ooo'ed and ahhh'ed at anything and everything that was sparkly... so we went to pick something out together!
