Diamond with Feather inclusion

i have a stone, VS1, with 6 tiny feathers in it (and nothing else). like it was stated earlier, feathers are really only a problem if they open to the surface or go through the girdle. i would be semi-worried about feathers really close to the girdle - the right amount of force or pressure could potentially cause it to grow into a "crack" that might affect the diamond overall. generally speaking, feathers are just another inclusion that are found in many diamonds! i always say, if tiffany's accepts it, it can't be that bad....

I chose my diamond with a tiny feather close to the girdle and I'm happy with it. However, I read that feather marked by GIA would be always surface reaching otherwise it wouldn't be a feather but crystal or something. I don't know if AGS does the same but it really bugs me a little...

I don't know where you read that, because it's not true. If it broke the surface, it wouldn't be considered an inclusion, but an indented natural.

Hey Ame, here's the link: https://www.pricescope.com/journal/diamond_feather_inclusions_durability_risk
In this section-GIA grading and feathers: "GIA clarity graders use the feather symbol to plot feathers that are close to the surface (extend from the surface into the stone) without breaking the surface. Feathers that break the surface by creating an opening are plotted as "cavities." If a feather is included and does not reach the surface, it is plotted as an “included crystal.” While the plotted crystal inclusion may actually be a fissure within the stone, if it does not reach the surface, the grader will not plot it as a feather."
So as it says, the grades will not plot a feather as a feather if it does not reach the surface which means a feather always reach the surface though it may not break the surface as you say :)

Feathers are listed as Feathers on the report. Crystals and cavities are different things and all are labeled as such a report. If it breaks the surface, it's going to be listed differently than something that isn't just internal. A feather that's near the surface, that could pose a durability risk is still a feather though.

Thank you for clearing that up. A feather that could pose a durability risk should be a large enough one? Such as those SI and VS2 ones? A feather that is VVS size should not be a durability risk anyway?

It would be really unusual for a feather in a VVS to be a durability risk. VS and lower are where you're going to see that.
Awesome! So far I stick to VVS2 or higher because I don't want to deal with the hassle - I am not quite good at using the loupe, and I want to believe in reputable jeweler's judgment.
