I posted a few days ago about possibly trading in a diamond solitaire for another piece of jewelry or a watch.

I think I've narrowed my choices down to trading it in either for a larger diamond or a Rolex.
If I choose to upgrade to a larger diamond, I'll most likely be going up around a quarter of a carat (from 1.27 to around 1.5). Would that be worth it?

We're meeting with our jeweler tomorrow to go over options and pricing.

Which would you chose and why?

I'd go rolex!

I have a 1.25 carat and actually went to Tiffanys to compare a 1.25 to a 1.5 carat solitaire. The difference on my hand was JUST so slight that it wasn't too much a deal for me.

I'd add a nice rolex to diversify a little.

Now if the question was between a 1.25 to a 1.75.... I'd have to REALLY think about it. But for a .25 carat difference it's not worth it to me.

id go for the rolex. honestly if you were to upgrade to a 2ct then it will be worth it as you can see the big difference but anything less than that it would just really be a slight change in size and believe me youd want to upgrade again sooner or later. if you however have a very good quality of diamond already, be content knowing that bigger doesnt always mean better...just my 2 cents.

I gather from your posts that you aren't emotionally vested in the diamond. And i feel like you really want the Rolex but feel the diamond is a better purchase. I say go with the Rolex.

I don't think it's worth that small of an increase for that trade honestly, if it was to 1.75 I would say to do it, but will you wear the Rolex enough to justify the stone being traded and no longer in your hands?

And what would you do with the upgraded stone?

Thanks for all of your responses so far!

I would definitely wear the Rolex almost every day, if not every day.

Here's my main concern about the diamond upgrade: it still wouldn't be my final upgrade since I would ultimately like between a 2-3 carat.

If we upgrade the diamond now, we'll still upgrade later on...but we'll have something to upgrade with ( the diamond). If I get a Rolex, we'll have to start from scratch essentially when I want my ultimate, final, dream ring.

Well if you're not done with the upgrading I wouldn't go with the Rolex now. I'd also probably still wait on the upgrade til you can get closer to where you really want to be. Small increments really aren't visible enough to make them worth the really high cost out of pocket. Is there any chance of getting slightly larger? What are the specs on the stone you are trading versus the one you are considering the trade to get?

Specs on my current diamond:
1.24 ct
K-L color
VS1 clarity
-no clue about the cut

I would want larger and excellent cut. I'm not picky about the color since I do like warmth, and of course eye-clean.

Well...I would seriously see what is available for you in the pricerange you can afford with trading in. If you're only gaining a quarter carat I'd wait and do nothing til you can afford a bigger jump. Does this ring currently get worn daily? OR is this like a second stone and not your e-ring? It will cost a lot more if you trade this towards a Rolex now, and you choose to buy a large stone later since you won't have this to offset it. It would be cheaper in the end to get a rolex outright separately.

You will still have a significant out of pocket expense with the trade irregardless of the ct size upgrade. I would either get the Rolex, if you truly feel you will wear it enough to justify the cost or not do anything currently until you are ready to upgrade to at least 1 3/4 or bigger ct wt. Best of luck with your decision.
