From my own experience buying online like blue Nile and at these Asian stores in oc where I live makes white difference in price and re sell value. I bought a round 1.62 ideal cut, I color, vs1, excellent exclent medium blue fluorescence or strong I forgot for $11k and when I needed to sell it no one offered me more $6k, but with my 1.17, IF, D color, hearts and arrow I bought 9 yrs ago and paid $9k for it, when I took it in they wanted for $15k, so diamond prices have gone up but it rely depends on the quality of the diamonds for re sell value. Also, buying from these places they will always buy back your diamond less 10%. I found that to be esxtremly helpful.

Everyone else has given you great information... for further reference, my pair is 1.5 ctw, H, VS1, very good cut, in a princess shape (which tends to run slightly less than round) and I paid $5200 for mine before tax. I bought mine in July 2006 so I'm sure there have been changes since then... but I agree with everyone that if you want a very good or excellent cut, you're likely going to need to spend more.

I think 1.5 ctw is a great everyday size and definitely noticeably larger than 1 ctw.
