Hi,

This is my first thread on TPF! :smile1:

I am planning to buy some diamond stud earrings on Blue Nile (platinum martini setting) of approximately 0.60 ct.

I already know that I want the “ideal” cut, but I’m not sure how to pick the other two C’s – which one is more important: the color or the clarity?
My Tiffany e-ring is color I and VS2 clarity and it sparkles like crazy…
Should I look for something similar? Or would I be better off with some slightly bigger studs, but with, for instance, color J and clarity SI2?

I’m not an expert, so I clearly don’t know whether you can tell the difference…

Thank you all very much in advance!

I would go for I-J VS2 or I-J SI1 because that way they are white and clear and if you ever want to use them for something else, like side-stones, you can reuse them.

If you'd like us to critique any stones (angles, etc) post the ones you've found.

Thank you very much for your help! I really appreciate it!

Below are some of the pairs I found, based on your recommendations…
Pair 1 is about 100 EUR less expensive than pair 5 – the others are somewhere in between.

:ty: (Love the smilies, as you can tell...)

Pair 1
0.60 ct – Ideal – J - VS2
Polish: very good
Symmetry: excellent
L/W Ratio:1.01 - 1.00

Depth: 61.3% - 61.8%
Table: 57.0% - 57.0%

Pair 2
0.60 ct – Ideal – I – SI1
Polish: very good
Symmetry: excellent
L/W Ratio: 1.01 - 1.01

Depth: 61.6% - 60.6%
Table: 57.0% - 57.0%

Pair 3
0.60 ct – Ideal – I – SI1
Polish: very good
Symmetry: excellent
L/W Ratio: 1.01 – 1.01
Depth: 60.4% - 61.5%

Table: 57.0% - 57.0%

Pair 4
0.68 ct – Ideal – J - SI1
Polish: excellent
Symmetry: excellent
L/W Ratio: 1.00 - 1.01

Depth: 62.0% - 60.7%
Table: 56.0% - 56.0%

Pair 5
0.60 ct – Ideal – I - VS2
Polish: very good
Symmetry: very good

L/W Ratio:1.01 - 1.00
Depth: 62.4% - 61.1%
Table: 56.0% - 57.0%

I'd probably go #1, #2 or #3.

See if you can find more sets that are 55-56% table with a depth between 60.8 and 62 that are close. Like both stones in the sat are like .5% apart max.

Hello, good morning!
I searched for some more diamonds on Blue Nile, but I didn't find a lot in the I-J SI1-VS2 range... Moreover, I wasn't sure if it's okay for the stones to have a different color, clarity or table (I guess it's better if not), so I included a whole bunch below (for which I would like to apologize)...
Thank you so much for your help, I really appreciate it!

Thank you so much!

I have one last question though.. :blushing:

I assume pair 9 of my second list is your favourite of both lists, right?
So, if you would have to make the choice between pair 9 (0.60 ct – Ideal – H – SI1 -61.6% and 61.7% - 56% and 56%) and this pair: 0.46 ct - Ideal - E - VS1 - 61.5% and 61.1% - 56% and 56% -> would you go for the 0.6 ct or the 0.46?

Thanks again...

don't forget: you can return any purchase at bluenile!

well, I prefer smaller diamond studs so Id go for the smaller pair. But this isn't for my head! And since your e-ring is an I, and if you ever dismantle your e-ring for a 3 stone, these H's would make excellent sidestones :)

Would you see a significant difference in size between .23 or .30 on each ear?

And apart from the e-ring resetting, would the E/VS1's sparkle visibly more than the H/SI1's?

I'm so excited to order my studs!!! :yahoo:

Thin and Thin to Medium are more ideal.

No. Not at all. Color and clarity are not what creates visible sparkle, cut is. The only way sparkle would be affected by either is if the stone is so included that the light cannot get around the facets.

I don't think you'll see a significant difference in 7 points on the ear. Side by side you would, but not attached to your head. I also think for earrings, an EVS1 is overkill. No one is going to get that close to your earlobe to notice.

I think I found the perfect pair for me!

How does this sound to you?

Total Carat weight: 0.62
Grading report: AGSL (is this okay? all of the others were GIA)
Cut: Ideal
Colour: I
Clarity: VS1
Depth: 61.4 and 61.2
Table: 55 and 55
Polish: Ideal
Symmetry: Ideal
Girdle: Thin to Medium, Faceted
Culet: Very small and None
Fluorescence: Negligible

I believe my DH would be extremely happy if this stud-madness would finally come to an end! :D
