Diamond Question

I agree with everything here. Just to add, if you are setting the diamond in yellow gold, you should focus on clarity as the diamond is just going to pick up the gold anyway. If you are going with white gold or platinum, you may lean towards color. It really important to see the diamond in the actual setting as that can make a difference.

I had a stone that was an H-I color, but the clarity was terrible. There were black carbon specks throughout the stone and they were glaring flaws in my eyes, the ring I have now, I wanted amazing clarity so I chose VVS1 clarity since it is a larger stone. The color is F, but I would have been fine with an H color as long as the stone was clear of visible inclusions.

I'm a clarity girl. I like looking closely into my stones and not seeing any flaws. My ring has VVS diamonds and I'm happy!

My diamonds are H color and in most circumstances, they are incredibly white (well cut, Tiffany cut) BUT there are a few times when I can see a tinge of color in my ring. It's not really a yellow (which I love) but more of a khaki color. But usually... I receive compliments on the color being so white or my stones being so clear.

Just buy the best quality you can and you'll have a beautiful ring!!!

Hi Ladies,
just fell upon this thread and you all seem so knowledgeable so I wanted to ask your thoughts on Cuts of diamonds. Is Very Good-a good cut? Or should it be ideal or higher for it to reflect light beautifully? TIA

^^ Ideal cut is what you need, but you need to know who's calling it an ideal cut. KWIM? Retailers can call stones whatever they want. Let us know where / what / how you're looking with more details and we may be able to help you more (but in your own thread).

With a cushion cut there is no "ideal" cut I have been told. Only Excellent is the highest GIA rating for that shape stone.?

This may be true. Finding "ideal" cushions is very difficult.

I have NO issues with a "very good/excellent" cut. I've seen ideals side-by-side with these & think they're fine.

Now, some will tell you the cut is the most important.....and I agree that it's high up there, but without the other 3 c's, the cut alone isn't enough.

Fancy cuts are not typically "cut graded" because there is no set "standard" set of angles etc. There are also quite a few cutting styles for things like cushions, and those are really hard to buy without photos or inperson viewing, etc.

I waited almost 6 months for my jeweller to find me a decent cushion in the specs we'd both be happy with.

Challenge is, many stones that look fabulous on paper are in reality, a disappointment. One of the reasons I ended up choosing a round.....that and, nothing can beat its sparkle

You ladies are always so helpful. We have just begun our research and already I have learned so much. It's always interesting reading everyone's opinions on which "C" they think is most imprtant, I can totally understand why it would be so subjective. I really have my heart set on a cushion cut, so learning more about the gradings of cuts in that shape is very helpful.:smile1:
