About the Romans, I love them and am actually pleased with the IIII. I read once that it makes the dial more balanced, in symmetry with the VIII opposite it. Works for me. And yes, it's a very old tradition.
Oh and for the contrarian point of view, I do think you can have too much bling on a Rolex.
